I promise this will be the last time i ask color qustions i hope LOL. For my Birthday im getting me 2 Mini rexs. Im going to attempt this breed again as i love them. Anyway i found a Broken black doe and a very pretty blue buck. I want to someday add a broken chocolate doe. So my plan is to bred the blue buck to my broken black doe and broken chocolate doe So going of this site below it sounds ok but want to check with you. And when ive retained plenty of does i will need a new buck what color would be best to use on the does?

A good safe color is a nice self black :) If your Black doe or Chocolate doe have the dilute gene you will likely get things like blues, black, chocolates, and lilacs

Dilute x Dilute crossings can cause toenails/color to lighten up if paired too many times, but always look for a buck with exceptional type ;)

__________ Sat Sep 21, 2013 7:48 pm __________

Have you checked out Noble Fur Rabbitry? He's got some very nice Mini Rex that will be available at Convention

The broken black doe came from a litter that had 1 chocolate and 1 possibility lilac rabbit in it. Sire was solid black dam broken black. So she may have the dilute gene in her.

The only way for there to be a dilute is if the parents were carriers since dilute is a recessive trait. So it's a possibility.

Ddx Dd

So your chances are DD 25%, Dd (carriers 50%), dd (25%)

So I'd say your chances are pretty good!

Here is the does , they sisters from the same litter. I can decide which i like more. Color wise i love the one with more blanket but something i read a long time ago said i think that the less blanket one would give me more brokens. I wish the less blanket one would have posed as i would love her pattern in my breeding program but the others body type looks better.
Think ive decide to get a blue doe and hunt for a black buck.

Less or more or a blanket has its plus and minuses. I prefer them to have a heavy pattern because sometimes I like to do Broken x Broken breedings, and the broken offspring come out heavily patterned. I got no charlies suprisingly! Sometimes keeping too light of a pattern can lead to less than 10% coloring and not be a true charlie. Sometimes too much pattern can lead to booted rabbits....but usually they come from rabbits that are booted. I've spent time talking to breeders and it seems consistent that it's best to cull out the booted ones or those that are marked normal and missing markings in the whisker bed.

To help evaluate these guys, make sure to get them stacked correctly. One thing I don't think that's going to change about them, is they seem to have low, long shoulders. So consider your future purchases with something that will compliment them. Are they juniors or seniors? Their coat looks soft to me, but it might be the camera. Photos and feeling an animal are two different things :)

Spending time in NF rabbitry and talking to the breeder, he showed me a nice trick to check for density of coat. You want to blow in and see if you skin....a dense coat you will see minimal to no skin.

Here are some helpful links on Mini Rex, plus I highly recommend her book. Nice $15 booklet with pictures!http://iceboxrabbitry.homestead.com/articles.html

Yea looking at a rabbit i see a cute fuzzy rabbit lol. Dont see a good rabbit or a bad one lol. Being im getting her as a birthday present and not having loads of money to spend. Hopping to find a nice looking buck to pair her to. Next spring we plan to start showing so thats when ill really start learning lol. But i think the first one looks better so ill probably pick her. Is shoulders hard to fix?
Ownbythebuns. At 1 time i planed to get all solid does and get a charlie buck but all the breeders i asked acted like that was a very bad question. So ive given up dont want all the breeders in this area mad at me lol

I hate saying but in all honesty low long shoulders is probably one of the top things next to poor HQ to cull for. Shoulders are a really hard fix if they are really long and low, BUT it depends on severity. If I had a doe with a touch too long but has amazing type, then I will keep her and breed her to a beefy shoulder buck. I like the one on top better than the one on bottom. The one on bottom isn't nice and rounded ( but she also isn't posed right) while the other seems a lot beefer, rounder overall and more eye pleasing.

This seems to only works well with linebred rabbits though. All my rabbits come from the same tree essentially, so it's easy to fix certain traits...when you bring in outside lines, it can be a crapshoot at that point because it's a lot of new genetic material.

When I stack my rabbits properly, I step back and just look at them and take in their balance (or lack of) and see if they can hold it. When they are built the right way, you can stand as a judge does, and take in the whole rabbit.

and the reason some breeders might look at you funny about charlies because they are usually culled from the nesting box right away or culled as pets with major breeders. Breeders rather worked with the nicely typed, correctly colored ones than take a chance with a charlie that they can't do much with. They also don't want to lead to the pattern being to light It depends on the breeder.

Show your doe and get some comments as always. We are not pros right off the back :)
