I have a mini rex doe with a bit of soft fur, she has great type though. Should I cull her?

depends...how badly do you need her type? do you have a buck that can correct her fur type? Is your rabbitry big enough and far enough along in your breeding goals to be able to work with her?

Yes, (to the holding off), as a Rex breeder, I have a beautiful typey REW Standard male with prominent guard hairs. He has a big blocky male head, depth, width, height and nice shoulder.
No way I'm culling him, and like the ladies said, fur is the easiest thing to fix. He's sired three litters, and no problems yet.

I have a mini rex doe, who has such prominent guard hairs, it doesnt even really feel rex-y. She throws to most beautiful kits with either of my 2 bucks!

Thank You!

__________ Thu Jul 05, 2012 5:48 pm __________

Thank You!

Question... when you say "prominent" guard hairs Sky, do you mean they are longer than the rest of the fur or just that there is a lot of them? Basically Rex and mini Rex should have guard hairs, just all the same length as the under coat. Rex fur should not be "soft" but should give resistance to your hand when you push against the fur. It may not be much of a problem if his coat is the same length. If you mean that broken black on your website I just saw, he is amazing and i def. wouldn't cull him!!

Bobbie if you really need your doe's type then find a buck with the beat fur possible and try her out. Rex fur can be a little more difficult to correct than normal fur because of all the different facets involved, being texture, density and length. If its soft from just one problem it may be more easily correctable than if she has all three problems. Density is probably the hardest to fix as it just doesn't come from nowhere, it definitely needs to be directly inherited from a parent.

Thanks for the compliment. The brk black is my herd sire that broke the toe nail; it finally grew back but he's past is senior prime now.
The problem buck it the REW. The guard hairs are not the same length, they stick out over the entire body, giving the fur a coarse texture. Kind of reminds me of a porcupine. The fur is very dense, but definitely not correct. He is a big boy, and a fast grower. I culled his brother, a castor, for that same reason.
