I have two adorable little magpie does that I picked up at the animal swap. What color REX would I have to use with them to get magpie Rex?
Would I have to save back kits from the first breeding and breed them together in hopes of getting what I am trying for?
This is one color I haven't quite got figured out and cant find much info on either.

What is a good book on rabbit genetics?

I know its not showable but boy will it make some interesting pelts.

Non extension for starters. A red would be nice. When you find one let me know, I'd like to try to get some tris and I would like a standard sized tort.

Get one? The magpie rex or the book? lol<br /><br />__________ Sun Aug 05, 2012 3:47 pm __________<br /><br />I was thinking if its for my own enjoyment and not for showing, I could always pick up a color I like in the mini and breed up the size using a standard Rex with recessive genetics like Lilac self. I need to find me a lilac self buck.

I am breeding for pelts and meat so would like to get bigger size But it seems that all the colors are readily available in the mini. How unfair is that...

The red rex for the non extension.

I have several websites I refer to, with great picts.

http://natalieshobe.tripod.com/id21.html

http://www.ephiny.net/hlcolorguide.php

http://www.doubledeckerrabbitry.com/rab ... r_genetics

http://www.gbfarm.org/rabbit/holland-colors.shtml

http://minkhollow.ca/mhf/doku.php?id=fa ... t_genetics

these sites are breed specific, so if the breed doesn't have the color, you have to look at another.

But I would much prefer to just find what I want in the Standard. Save me some steps.<br /><br />__________ Sun Aug 05, 2012 3:52 pm __________<br /><br />I spent allot of time studying the last sight you shared over the last month. They have tons of good info.

It would be good if you had a Rew / Himi who is non-extension underneath (either red or tort, don't know if Magpie is agouti or self)

From what I have read on it If I cross my magpie with a black rex, keep the magpie babies to cross back to each other I should get a 33% chance of magpie rex in second generation breeding? Maybe?

I would l o v e to get a REW STandard Rex. But the question is Where? lol

Minis are everywhere up here but standards are at least 3 hours away and far and few between. I wonder if I could cross the minis with my NZ to boost the size of the minis? Would take some time but could it work? I would at least have a chance that way.

You would only get Magpie in the first cross IF the Black rex carries harlequin/tort and a lower-c gene.
If he is a aaB_CCD_EE then he will dominate the genes of the Magpie doe and hide them.
So in order to get Magpie in the first litter, your buck has to be this genotype aaB_CcD_Ee(Eej)
Any idea what he carries there? Or what he produced with recessive doe's?

Nope, He is young and so are the magpie. It will be months before I can breed them. That is why I am figuring at least 2nd or 3rd generation. But the question is will it work in the 2nd or 3rd. Or is it a hopeless pipe dream? lol

I got plenty of those, I usually cull them, I just sent my buck to the snake man. But I could not tell you if he carried non extension. Probably not.

You could find a mini that is a false dwarf.<br /><br />__________ Sun Aug 05, 2012 5:46 pm __________<br /><br />

Harlies or Magpies can be agouti or self, magpies need the chld gene. You would need a non extension x chin, that's asking for the world right there. You are going to have to create this one, looking for something in the F2 or F3.

I got one earlier this year from lonelyfarmgirl, who is here on the forum (or used to be). She's in Wisconsin.

I've got some! Coming to California anytime soon?

You really gotta try to get to Wisc.

We need to get a bunny train going to get these Rexes from Cali to over here.

MSD I wish!! If I don't find something around here I may just have too. :)

skysthelimit, We sure do!!

I found a REW yesterday. A buck. The guy is giving it to me when he drops off the others on Wednesday. They are minis but I am raising them for meat and pelts so I suppose I could breed the NZ into them to boost the size. But that will take so much longer than just finding what I want in Standard.

Still hoping the Wisconsin thing pans out but haven't heard back from him after my last email a few days back. I am going thru Wisconsin on the 17th and again in September. I just want my standard Rex Bunnies. How hard should it have to be? lol<br /><br />__________ Mon Aug 06, 2012 9:06 am __________<br /><br />If I travel all the way to Cali for Rabbits I will surely have a big shopping list when I go. I have a feeling there will be some other people in my kneck of the woods (midwest) with lists for me as well. :)

Tomorrow the rest of my bunnies will be delivered.
1 black buck
1 blue buck
1 REW buck
1 blue/tan doe
1 opal doe
3 black does
Gotta finish some cages for the bucks to go in TODAY!!

I have no idea!!! I agreed to take her because I am buying the rest of his Rex bunnies and she is mom to my pretty little opal. I will be getting them tomorrow and will see what she is. I got them for practacly free. Just paying for gas to get them here. So whatever I don't like Will be dinner.
I will post pics tomorrow. I have to go out and fix then buck cages yet and move the NZ crosses into the other pen so I will be ready for tomorrow. I can't wait.<br /><br />__________ Tue Aug 07, 2012 3:33 pm __________<br /><br />i am expecting an Opal because he called my little opal a blue and tan as well. But never know till We see it!!!!

Blue otter would be nice, or Opal either one. I can't wait to see her tomorrow. It is a surprise package for sure.
I guess the White buck has some messed up chewed on ears but he was another freebee and shouldn't effect his breeding abilities.
I can't believe I am still up working on cages are 1:30 in the morning and taking a break to post on here. lol

__________ Wed Aug 08, 2012 11:43 am __________

Oh how I wish he would hurry up and get here. Im sitting in the feed store parking lot waiting. And when he finally called he said he was running late because he stopped at menards to shop. Like he couldn't wait to shop till after he met up with me!!! UGH I can't stand the suspended. Lol its cruel and unusual punishment for sure!!!!!

__________ Wed Aug 08, 2012 3:14 pm __________

Ok now here is what I ended up with. Some good and some not so much.

Bucks: 1 black, 1 blue, 1 REW, 1 castor - all pretty good

Does: 1 lynx, 1 opal, 1 castor, 1 black(dwarf cross), 1 charlie black(dwarf cross), 2 magpie and a white. I will play around with what I have till I can get my STandards now. :)

NZ cross: 1 buck and 6 does.

my son and husband ended up with a pair of sandy flemish giants. LOL

Now I am waiting to get my trio of chocolate otter with the lilac in the background and a blue and a black doe as well. Then my Bunny herd will be complete.............................OK ok so I will feel like I at least have a decent start. lol
