So I am learning the difference, pardon if you've explained this to me once or twice before.

My brain IS getting better now that my swelling is down! (hurrah!). I'm still having to re learn some stuff I recently learned though!

Here are photos of this baby bun. Mom is a new zealand mix red in color. No spots and doesn't "appear" to be broken. Buck is a solid chocolate, but with test mating has produced vienna marked kits. Including two Harlies and a couple black and whites with blue eyes.

So far, I'm not seeing the normal red that comes with a harlie. The last couple harlies I had seemed to have gotten pretty red in color by a week old. But maybe this one is a late bloomer? Being that the Mom is red, won't that affect the rufus (sp) color?

Oh and it doesn't appear to be BLACK and white. More of a blackish brown. Anyway, curious what you all think. I love learning about colors.

Hmm... it looks like a magpie but you would need a chinchilla gene to make that.

Will I be able to tell when it's more mature by looking at the entire length of the hair from root to tip?

__________ Tue Dec 17, 2013 1:37 pm __________

MSD, thanks!!!

It's a magpie. Meaning either your buck or doe carries cchd, and the other carries cchl or c.

__________ Tue Dec 17, 2013 9:22 pm __________

Though, it is possible to get a sable magpie, they are lighter in colour and that appears to be a true black magpie.

So it could be a sable magpie. Have you gotten any seals, siamese sables or sable points from the doe or buck?

Harlequin and magpie are the same colour modifier - called "Japanese Harlequin" and denoted as "ej_" - but on different base colours.
-Fawns or torts with the gene are called harlequin
-chinchillas/frostys or sable points are called magpie

I got a light light grey pointed kit from the buck. It was an all white kit with dark eyes, I realized as it was getting older that the ears, nose, and tail were the faintest grey color.

That would be a frosty so the buck secretly has a chinchilla or shaded gene on his C-locus. Because the frosty looked pointed it is likely the shaded gene.

It appears Buckaroo carries everything! I kid, but seriously, he's the buck of hidden genes. He has given me so many different colors/types of kits that it's just darn amazing. And to look at him, he's just a brown lop eared mutt.
