Eenie, my "Evil" Californian doe died yesterday (Friday). I found her in her nesting room when I got home from work. She was just starting to let me pet her without freaking out too much as long as I moved slow. Her high strung personality probably didn't help her with the heat stress.

The heat has been pretty tough so far and today was the worst yet. My DW said it was 108 today. I saw the thermometer in the rabbit run reading 105 with the misters and fans on when I was running a 2nd round of ice out.

We took Eeinie's 7 kits inside Friday and hand fed them a mixture of 2 parts KMR to 1 part Goats Milk formula. I gave them a blade of grass each to test them out on eating on their own. They were 3 weeks old Friday. After I took them back out to the Rabbit Run, they were picking at the Manna Pro and Calf Manna mix. I added BOSS and oatmeal today, but they're just nibbling here and there.

We fed them the formula mix again tonight and they'll be staying indoors until tomorrow. It's still pretty hot out there and it's past midnight. A cold front tomorrow should drop the temps back down to the high 90s. We'll put them back out then.

I'm hopeful that we can hand rear the kits until they're completely weaned. I don't want to put them in with our other Cali doe since she's also struggling with the heat and her 5 kits.

None of the kits meet the planned breeding program, so none are keepers. I'll need to find another purebred Cali doe to replace her to get back on track.

__________ Mon Jul 01, 2013 8:14 am __________

Added - I wouldn't have thought that I'd miss my "Evil Doe" as much as I do. She was high maintenance. She didn't like me much, but was starting to accept me. She even let me pet her a few times, but would revert back to her skittish ways shortly after. I think that given enough time, she would have learned to trust me.

My wife knows me better than I know myself. She said she knew I'd miss Eenie since I spent so much time with her. I'm a little down today, but it'll pass. There's too much to do to dwell on it. At least her kits are doing well.

So so sorry to hear this, TMTex. Eenie was a handful, but a character in her own right.

*fingers crossed for the kits, and for a break in the heat for everyone*

Awww I'm so sorry for your loss TMTex. I hope her kits do ok and you can have one of her daughters to remember her by. Hope that heat wave breaks for you all soon!

I'm so sorry, TMTex! :(

I discovered myself recently how the difficult ones manage to stake out extra room in your heart. We had to put down a dwarf doe, who was a companion to a NZW. She never was nice, didn't want to be held, didn't want to be petted, just not friendly at all. Every now and then you'd manage to start scratching her head, and she'd struggle to get away, and then accidentally forget that she didn't like it.

I was so sad when we had to put her down. :(

Very sorry you lost her.

The heat is just brutal, especially in TX. My oldest son keeps sending me screen shots of the current temps where he is in TX.

Sending good thoughts that the kits make it and you can find a nice cali doe.

So sorry TMTex. I don't think it is ever easy when you lose one.

I'm sorry to read of Eenie's passing, Tex. Fingers crossed and good vibes winging your way for the successful raising if her kits..and a drop in temperature for you and your buns!

I had a couple of litters I early weaned at about 3 weeks for sneezing moms. I put them on mostly oatmeal with a few pellets and timothy hay. They did fine and I didn't lose any of them. Hopefully yours are able to do fine at 3 weeks. Sorry you lost your doe. I know a lot of the breeders I talked to around here said they lost a lot of rabbits to the heat last summer, and this year seems hotter.

Thanks everyone.

The kits are doing ok. We hand fed them again last night and added some probiotics to the formula. They seem to be eating the pellets/calf manna/BOSS mixture, but the level of the feed bowl isn't going down as fast as I'd like to see.

I'm comparing them to my other doe's kits, who are 3 days older. Those are eating tons of pellets from their mother's feed bin and are more than twice as big.

Somebody on here told me to add some poops from an adult rabbit to their food to help build natural probiotics in the babies. The little ones just need a gentle diet right now(which is why I did more oatmeal than pellets). They did take a little longer to grow out than the ones that stayed with a doe much longer, but they did fine. Glad they are doing good. Hopefully that's all the damage the heat will do.

Thanks, CND. There's plenty of that around. I'll look for some "night poop" and put it in their hutch. I think the adults eat it though and I don't want to pick it up from the ground under the hutches. I've been spraying for fire ants almost daily. Hopefully, there'll be some in the hutches.

I have found that regular poops do just fine ... I give them some dry ones near the hay and drop a couple in the water dish.
