I am very cautious about soy even though most commercial rabbit feeds use it to up the protein. I don't like it for two reasons. Uncooked it has several toxins and I'm not sure how much of that is removed by steaming. The second reason is that virtually all soy available nowadays is GMO.
I know rabbits should never get beans, cooked or not as they can lead to intestinal problems.
Lentils however are tolerated by many people who cannot eat cooked dry beans.
I recently cooked some lentils into a sort of paste for myself and as an experiment gave about a tablespoon or so to each adult rabbit. They loved them. I'm going to slowly increase the amount and keep an eye out for loose stool. They are almost as high in protein as soy beans and are very cheap.
Has anyone else tried this?

You fed the paste or you fed the dry beans? Have not tried this myself...lentils rarely make it past my mouth! LOL LOVE lentils!

I fed them the cooked paste. I'm not sure I'd trust the dry beans even though they are low in toxins. I think they might be difficult for bunrabs to digest. BTW the lentils I gave them were cooked for me so they had cumin, turmeric and a touch of cinnamon in them. Maybe that's why the buns liked them so much. ;)

Spoiled bunnies!

I hope they can't communicate telepathically with their relatives or my herd may be on the march to San Diego! :lilbunny: :lilbunny: :lilbunny: :lilbunny:

Right after I posted I went into the garden to look at the huge clump of turmeric I have growing there and wondering about the turmeric leaves so I cut one and gave half to Reuben and half to Rachel. They dove right in so I guess I have a new source of greens I hadn't thought about. Turmeric is chock full of nutrients and anti oxidants so I don't see how it could be anything but good for them.

GASP!

Miss M, please do not speak of eating Rachel and Reuben! Remember, these are the wabbits I brought to Hoodat!

At least let him get a few litters out of them before you start making Middle Eastern Rabbit dishes out of them!

 Oh, no! Not Rachel and Reuben! But aren't their progeny for freezer-filling?

Yes indeed. Hoodat, feel free to pre-season the progeny!

Let's see what I have here. A little thyme, some sage, maybe a touch of Mexican oregano? Rosemary? I also have Italian and Thai basil.

Yummy bunnies!

Rabbits do like Rosemary and oregano. And who doesn't like Basil? When I trim the flower buds off of the Basil the bunnies get it.

I took a walk yesterday down to the patch of wild giant dandelion I found and cut a shopping bag full for the buns. I can take a bus close to it but it's just about 2 miles so it makes a good exercise walk for me if I hoof it.
