So, I thought of starting this thread for those of us who would like to learn how to judge/critique Holland Lops. The idea started on a goat forum, and I thought it would be neat to do it with rabbits too!

So:
-First off, one of us posts a picture of a Holland Lop...whether it's pedigreed or not, show quality or not
-Some of us beginners post what we think of it (pros & cons)
-Then an other, more experience person comes behind us, and points out what we got right/wrong and what we missed
-ANYONE can post a picture, but it has to be a Holland Lop :)

Since I've been having trouble uploading pictures, who wants to upload a picture first? :)

P.S. if you have an more questions about how this exactly works, feel free to ask!

I think this blue tort holland has a Nice Blocky Head and Solid HQ's but lacks in the shoulders and front feet are a bit long. I think he is showable and should come with a pedigree. Just my guess though. :)

Slipped crown
There's something I don't like about his head...the nose goes too far forward?
Head mount too far forward
Cut off rump
Poor topline
Unbalanced

Good crown definition
Nice round ears
Nice rounded ear tips
Short shoulder
Good bone

I'm game -- maybe a couple good pics of proper positioning for judging would help?
I'm clueless.

Here's a link that shows how to properly pose a Holland: http://s4.zetaboards.com/Rabbit_Addict/ ... /?x=10#new

Slipped Crowns Explained: http://s4.zetaboards.com/Rabbit_Addict/ ... /?x=10#new
Crowns & Ears of Holland Lops: http://www.thenaturetrail.com/rabbit-ju ... rs-crowns/

Head issues:
Pinched/flat muzzle look
Slipped crown/poor definition
Long ears
Folded ears at base
Low head mount

Body issues:
Long shoulder
Long body
Lacking in width and fullness over all; hallow midsection (see the indent like place right behind the front legs and before the hip?)
HQ sloping off, should be gradual not sharp drop
Long in bone (see feet on front that flip out)

Cannot really evaluate over all width, fullness of body, width of head from front, chest, hq width, with just a side shot. I've seen some that looked really nice from the side, but they were V shaped really rather than U.

Because he is so long in shoulder, that pose is probably the best going to get even though he appears over posed (again a length issue). There is some thing else off about his hq, should not have an indented look to the midsection even with a hallow mid section. He does seem to have good dense bone and good full cheeks, but too long to balance over all. Nice well furred ears, but should be rounder in shape and much shorter to balance correctly. To really give an accurate evaluation, need to not only look at a side shot but also a top (posed) and front (posed) plus rear (posed). I know that's really hard to do, but have to look from all angles to get best opinion and to see the whole picture of the rabbit since we can't feel them :)

When I get a bit more time, I'll sit down and do red/blue drawings on the pictures to try to help illustrate better IF that's okay with you CanadianWinter?

Sure, that would be fine with me :) I'll see if I can dig up some other pictures I have of posed Hollands as well :)

I personally don't breed Hollands so this is my opinion. I like that their small and massive.
PROS:
Nice Crown
Good Shoulders
Solid HQ's
Cons:
Ears Too Long
Head Too Small For The Ears
Legs
Bone

The doe I posted:

-Typical doe head
-Nice flat muzzle
-Nice crown
-Topline is pretty good,

Slipped crown
Ears folded at base
Narrow ears
Long shoulder
Dew lap

Uhh, Rebel.Rose? I know there's a whole lot more to her, both good and bad :) What's your opinion? :)

And ZachsRabbits:

-Nice head
-Good crown
-Well shaped ear tips
-Nice shoulder
-Nice topline, for the most part
-Good shoulders

Folded ear tops
Low head mount
Undercut hq's
"flipper" front feet

At what point do you want to see substance?
I assume there a stage of teenage uglies?

We have a nice doe and buck (juniors) but we have another buck that I am not impressed with.

I haven't posed him here, obviously.
But his ears (oi!)-- the crown is too tight? Still may settle?
(He wasn't purchased as show but for breeding, belongs to my daughter but I don't think he is up to snuff!)
What I wonder most is about the white markings in his nose and base of ears... Would they be a DQ?

I've seen Hollands who ears never go down. They stay pinwheeled like that. Hopefully he grows out of it.
How much white I have to see a picture of it. But is a DQ.

The whit is visible on the pic -- above the nose and base of the ears there are sections of white hairs.
Thanks!

Thanks! Now to see if I can talk my daughter into selling him!
Thankfully he is her least favourite.
I just don't see anything worth breeding forward on him.

I still would get a soild buck to breed with your broken doe because broken to broken equals charlies.

Zachs~ yes! our plan from the beginning was a solid doe and a broken doe to go with the opposite male :) and I'm hoping to find something at an up coming show.
She wants a black or blue self or shaded.
