Kyle asked me to post and let everyone know he's killed his laptop, so will be on an unexpected hiatus.

What?!? Why'd he go all homicidal all of a sudden?

Could it be that the LCD screen just died? I hear that is an easy fix.

I think it's the CMOS battery, or, since he doesn't know if his laptop even has an antivirus, could be viruses killed the hard drive.

I know the feeling. I had to resurrect an ancient tower, perhaps Kyle will soon have the same good fortune.

Laptop skeet shooting? He's a better shot than me if he hit it. ;)

If his CMOS battery is dead, he might be able to boot temporarily by plugging it in and turning power on, entering the CMOS setup and setting the date and time. Windows doesn't like it when the date is too far off. Keep the laptop plugged in to be able to go online until the new battery arrives.

Getting into the CMOS setup can be different for different laptops. The default standard is the DEL key repeatedly on powerup, but who sticks by standards anymore? It should be one of the following...

For ACER, it's the DEL, F2 or CTRL + ALT + ESC keys.

For Compaq, it's the DEL, F1, F2 or F10 keys. Usually the F10 key.

For Dell, it's the Fn + ESC, Fn + F1, CTRL + ALT + ENTER or the F2 key.

For Gateway, it's the F1 or F2 key.

For HP, it's the ESC, F1, F2, F10 or F12 key.

For IBM/Lenovo, it's the F1 or F2 key.

For NEC, it's the F2 key.

For Packard Bell, it's the DEL, F1 or F2 key.

For Sharp, it's the F2 key.

For Sony, it's the F1, F2 or F3 key.

For Toshiba, it's the F1 or ESC key.

Wow. I hope one of your suggestions works, TMTex. Kyle is a mainstay here; at least, it's seemed like that to me in my short time of being on the board. I'm glad he let us know about the bunny ear lopping yesterday....and that he's through with his exams...and that his back is easing up.

But the board may be his big social outlet, for all I know....

Argggh hopefully he has another computer to access the internet to search for help. Computer problems are never ending. With 4 laptops and 4 desktops, I feel like I am always fixing something.

I thought I was busy! :p 3 desktops, one laptop, and one desktop someone gave me to see if it was any good. If it is, I'll fix it up and give it to somebody who needs it.

:welcomewagon:

Glad to see you back, Kyle!!!

It seemed like you had been gone foreverrrr!

At least your friend got it working again. I hope you at least did your dishes. ;)

Oh im glad you are back up and running KYLE, computer problems are never fun, I just got a new HP laptop and love it, My last one I threw off my balcony (yes I really did) when i got my new one, and watched it smash onto the cement, It was such a great feeling!! :)

I should add, my old one had crashed hence why I threw it off my balcony, it was un salvagable

My tech savvy friend, Arthur, seems to've fixed it while I ate his food and stuff. :) Google Chrome keeps crashing though so...dunno yet what's up. :p
Awesome! :p Please thank your friend on behalf of all of us. :D

Might want to have a backup installation of Firefox or Opera, to make sure you can get online if Chrome refuses to cooperate.

Kyle, you're alive! Or, at least...for a while, you got a computer to be alive! :)

If it isn't something wrong then it massive updates that need to be done. 2 of the laptops are only used occasionally and when I do use them it takes me 30 minutes or more just to update them.

Glad you are getting back on Kyle

LOL when I posted, I wasn't actually back...my laptop was still all broken. ;) Turns out I had 248 malware programs on my poor, abused laptop, plus it had about a frillion updates it was trying and failing to install. LOL!

So instead of the week or three of MIA, I guess it was only about 48 hours or so. LOL sorry. ;)

Aw, why thank you! ;)

The forum here is awesome so I jump on it when I'm bored and want to read stuff...and when I'm "breaking" from studying. Reading a few threads between study sessions seems to help my retention! :)

I have three desktop towers...and not a one works well. One works fine but won't recognize ANY internet source...the other two, well...one is over a decade old, and the other one experience the Blue Screen of Death. :p

In other words, all my desktops are paperweights. ;)

Kyle needs it!

Apparently my battered, abused Toshiba has been resurrected, YAY! :)

At least your friend got it working again. I hope you at least did your dishes.

LOL nope. I don't do dishes. ;) Then again he didn't either...so I guess it's all good? ;)

Every time I think I'm gonna get to smash a piece of dead tech with a sledgehammer...I sell it first. :p

Welcome back, Kyle!

Wasn't actually back yet but thanks!! :)

Awesome! :p Please thank your friend on behalf of all of us. :D

I bought him a pie as a gesture of thanks. And I graciously only ate about a quarter of it for him. ;)

Well the original symptoms were the computer getting halfway through the startup mode, then shutting down. :p Never got to Chrome until Art fiddled with it...and then it crashed incessantly until he disovered I had no antivirus or malware protection...and he laughed so hard. Apparently it is hilarious! :p

LOL A sledge hammer ....You just gave me a great new idea for next time!!! lol , Im not anywhere near computer Savvy even though everyone think I am because I'm "young" (29) My era is right on the cusp I didn't have computers in school(in every classroom at least) until the 11th grade, lol Now I believe they are at every desk...Also I'm an Rph so apparently that means I'm good with technology...NOT SO... Anywho glad your up now, and the Toshiba has been ressurected, have fun studying!!

Aldo
