This kit had poop stuck on his genitals and I've been cleaning and doctoring him. He looked a bit raw yesterday after I removed the poop. I thought he had yellow pus on it but I was mistaken. It's his poop. His poop is a dark mustard color and comes out the consistency of thick pus.

His penis is almost entirely raw on the underside.

Here's how I've been doctoring: I remove the dried poop with peroxide. I squirt the peroxide on him and let it loosen the poop. I don't tug the poop off at all. I gently wipe and add more peroxide until it comes off on its own. Then I spray with a neosporin + pain reliever spray to help with any pain. I give it a few minutes to start working, then cup his butt in my hand and put more peroxide in my hand so it has a chance to really clean the wound.

This morning, his penis was so so swollen. As soon as it was clear of the dried poop, he peed a ton.

Right now, he's resting on my lap on a warm towel. I want to give the wound time to dry and form its own protective 'crust' before I put him back into the nest. He's raw, swollen and has weird poop.

What else should I do? What should I be on the lookout for?

Wow, that is really swollen. :x

Peroxide is not good for newly formed tissue- it actually damages the new cells. I know I suggested the peroxide for loosening the poo, and I stand by that, but it isn't helping his raw penis. Maybe warm water would be better now- you could just sit his butt in a bowl of water for a bit. (While you hold him, of course!)

Do you have diaper rash ointment? I think a really thick coating of ointment might help to keep the poo from sticking to him- just slather it on. You could use neosporin ointment too, but it isn't as "sticky" as A&D Ointment.

It might be better to isolate him and bring him to the doe only for feedings. That way she wont lick the ointment off, and you could let him nurse away from the other kits in case he has something contagious.

Goats milk seems to have a constipating effect, so maybe you could supplement him with that. I used to hand feed a lot of kittens (people brought orphans to the pet stores and vet's offices all the time) and on KMR their stool was runny, but by adding 1/2 goat milk the stools were well formed.

Good luck with the poor little guy!

Yah, I was concerned about the peroxide drying out the skin. I put Vaseline on it yesterday but all the fur and shavings in the next stuck to him which kinda defeats the purpose.

He's had two small poops that were olive green and somewhat solid so I'm wondering if the yellow poop was from being unable to poop?

I've been wiping the poops off him since he's on my lap. I'm going to keep a close eye on him today and continue applying the neosporin. I'll probably put him in a spare box with some towels and put the vaseline on him.

Yes, the peroxide is awesome for loosening the poop. I'm able to get the poop off without having to worry about pulling on the skin.

Keeping him isolated is a good idea, and if you can continue to monitor him and wipe the poop off frequently that should help a lot. The pain relieving spray is a good idea too- I'm sure he appreciates that!

He did really well today. The swelling has gone down a bit and he's not looking nearly as raw. I have a diaper cream called Calmoseptine that pharmacists keep behind the counter. It worked wonders on my daughter's horrible rashes and was the only thing that helped her. I put a dab on Howie (we've named him Howie because he has an owie) and it seemed to help a lot.

He's in the nest for the night for his feedings but will be kept out during the day tomorrow.

__________ Fri Mar 23, 2012 2:08 pm __________

Wow what a difference this morning!

The Calmoseptine is really helping. Keeping him by himself and being able to check him constantly helped a lot. The swelling is almost gone and he's looking very nicely healed. He'll be in the nest all day tomorrow so we'll see how he does.

Hey I have a 3 week old bunny that has the same thing going on. I took it to the only vet that was available today & really wanted a second opinion.

I noticed today that the bunnies genital area is sooo swollen & red. It also has a funny smell. I've been using an anticeptic rinse along with muperocin topical oitment and noticed there is also green puss coming out of the pee hole. The butt hole is very swollen too, but the (what appears to be an infection) is the pee area. I am unsure if it is a boy or girl because the area is too inflamed to tell. Also, the bunny keeps licking the area AFTER I put the ointment. The doctor said it would be okay, but still. This baby is a day short of 3 weeks. Any advise?

Do not use antiseptics and especially peroxide repeatedly on sensitive tissue. Don't even use peroxide at all on any part of the body unless you need to help remove debris. They are very damaging and drying to the skin. If there is no infection there and just inflammation from irritation skip the medications. Just use water and maybe plain dawn dish soap or a mild nonmedicated animal shampoo to clean. Dab on a little oil or vit e to help moisturize and heal the skin.

clip all that hair back, keep checking on him throughout the day to keep it clean, drop ONE drop of penicillin on it and it should heal up fine. I"ve done it with kits. sometimes it takes a a couple of weeks to completely heal, sometimes less.
