Have to do some work to the cage I found in the barn. What is a good reliable brand of J-Clip Pliers? I've seen 2 types: Wire Clip Pliers by Little Giant and Heavy Duty J-Clip Pliers by Bass.

The pair I have was labeled by Pet Lodge, they work just fine. I'm not sure how they compare to the ones you are looking at.

Here is what mine look like

A tip that might help you, when using them, one jaw is a single, the other a double. It seems to me, that the clips crumpled easier when you insert the curved end of the clip into the single jaw and the flat end into the double jaw.

The ones I was looking at all said that the handles bent after a few uses. Just saw another pair for $112. Not buying those. That's just nuts. Thanks for the helpful tip.

I think I paid around $10 or so for mine. I have so far used around 3-4 pounds of j clips in them, lot of rabbit cages, guinea pig cage, a few small chicken transport cages, etc.
I haven't bent mine.

I have the pair Klubertanz sells for about $14. They work exactly like they are supposed to, and never hurt my hands.

Yep, these or the ones from Bass. The cheapo ones are crap-ola.
Why are the cheaper ones crap?
I have the cheaper ones, bought in 2010, have used hundreds upon hundreds of J clips. They always function as they are intended to.

Do not buy the ones from Tractor Supply they didn't make it through a single cage and they hurt your hands something fierce.

I recently bought the ones from Bass. They are wonderful!

I was just about to say not to buy them from Tractor supply. Complete waste of money.

I like the kind Zass linked to here much better then the other kind with the double wide end, the big kind [like pet podge kind] are very hard to get in tight places, and between the 1/2 inch spacing when fastening bass type sani-nests to the cage bottom. and when trying -- the clip falls out a lot, or moves enough to go on crooked.

Over the years I've accumulated 3 pair just like the one's Zass pictured.
But, without the plastic coated handles. They're nearly impossible to wear out.
On one pair, someone ground the profile down to allow easier access to
some of the tight places we oftentimes have to get into. Those are my
favorite pair.
I've built literally 100's of cages with these pliers and they're still doing
their job.

Grumpy.

As for the actual J-clips. I would figure that their all pretty much the same but I would be re-missed if I didn't ask "Is there any different between the brands?" :D

I have had some different experiences with them.

The cheap ones are thin, and are applied easily. This makes them perfect for applying babysaver wire to the outside of an existing cage. It also makes them not so great for structural use -- I have had J-clips slowly open up when used to attach a floor. I had two give way one night and allow a rabbit to escape.

On the other end of the spectrum, I also have stainless steel Klubertanz J-clips. If I used profanity, they would be worthy of it when trying to curl them with my cheapo pliers (yeah, I need to get some of those Zass linked to). They don't tend to curl over on themselves, either, like the thinner ones do. They are not the clips you want to install babysaver wire with, like I just had to do when I couldn't find my cheap clips. BUT... I certainly hope I never have to remove them from anywhere I've used them, because they just might be permanent. Pretty much indestructible clips.

I use the pliers from Tractor Supply and first partially close the clip by squeezing it in the pliers alone, then placing it around the wire. I have had no problems with these, and with the process. I always place my clips so that one end wraps around the other, and squeeze them down so there's not much play. The tool that I Would Not Trade For Anything is my over-priced heavy duty J-Clip removers that cost about $30 bucks. Those things rock. Pliers ain't getting it if I change my mind, or tear out a section of cage to replace.

Well I used the Little Giant J-clips that are found at orscheln farm home. The issue I have is that the store is always out of stock of everything I need. SO I had to make a trip to Tractor Supply :x . The clips from there are 100% thicker and can't be rolled. Well, if you have the hand strength of the Hulk then I guess they will curl. Only got through 8 yesterday. :x Will not be buying those again. EVER. I would rather use twice as many of the weaker ones then the stronger ones. Just my input, in case anyone else reads this thread.

wamplercathy, The heavy duty j clip-pliers from bass or just about any where roll them with out any trouble at all, and very easy on the hands imo.
I bought these http://m.ebay.com/itm/MILLER-PET-LODGE- ... 1351760523 and they worked real well in till I had to roll the thicker ones. So maybe I'll have to invest in a better pair. :x I'll have to check out the ones from Bass.

These are the type we have. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Heavy-Duty-J-Cl ... 20f7e4827e

Have never tried these but they look interesting. http://www.ebay.com/itm/J-clip-pliers-f ... 3f49115dc2

Thinking about ordering the second pair just to see how they do, but the top one works very well - no sore hands.

That second pair looks very nice but shipping puts it out of our reach lol they would have to be made of gold for that amount.

-- Mon Mar 23, 2015 3:39 pm --

Bass pliers http://www.bassequipment.com/Cage+Assem ... fault.aspx
