We ate one of our first babies today. I was rather proud of myself. I dressed it out myself with my daughter helping to hold the legs. I was afraid it would bother me, killing one we raised, but it didn't. Kasey was fine with it also, we both just kept thinking about how good it was going to taste. This was the second rabbit I had ever eaten (as far as I know). The first being an old doe that I couldn't get bred and stewed.

Everyone says rabbit tastes a lot like chicken. My daughter and I beg to differ. We don't think it tasted anything like chicken...it did taste alot like squirrel. I guess that is a good thing. All my kids love squirrel. How redneck does that make us?

Nothing wrong with squirrel. Sometimes I eye the squirrels leaping about in the big trees back of the house and think how good they'd taste. But, alas, my hunting days are long in the past.

I think squirrel is a bit tastier than rabbit.
We still eat a lot of both.

Your right squirrel is a bit richer however, I'm not partially fond of the smell of squirrel while I'm preparing it. I think the rabbit was milder and that is great as far as I'm concerned.

Glad to know we are not the only family around here that eats squirrel.

:congratulations: On your first home grown and home processed rabbit meal...You have just joined the elite club of Meat Producers..
I would love to have some nice fat squirrels but in my area all we have is rock or ground squirrels Not really big enough to mess with...

I think it's mainly that it can be used instead of chicken in chicken recipes. I think it gets compared to chicken because of the most commonly eaten meats, it's probably most like chicken.

Chicken has a slightly larger market share than squirrel. :p

We all love squirrel! And when they're all cleaned, they look just like miniature rabbits!

I did notice a resemblance lol

I did mess up one thing. I forgot to weigh before and after dress out. I'm guessing this one weighed a bit under 4lbs live weight. They will be 10 weeks on Sunday and I had been tracking their weight every week. These are my small meat mutts.

Hey now, Squirrel. I am from Eastern Kentucky, and we eat them Fox squirrels that can get 3-4 pounds live weight. They are sly devils though, and require you to trick them, or they will sit on the opposite side of the tree, so you can not shoot them. A little log throw to their side of the tree, usually results in their demise, and my belly full.

I 100% adore squirrel, and the taste is far richer than rabbit, but I don't have time to chase them critters much.

I haven't had squirrel since i was very young so I can't remember what it tasted like. Now I want to try it again. I'm eyeballing one that keeps squittering across the fence when I come out but it looks a bit scrawny. Hmm, when I finally do eat one wonder if I'll think, " tastes like rabbit"?

I have a freezer full of squirrels, I'm looking forward to that rainy day when I decide to take a few out and cook em' up. Im thinking about doing a squirrel pot pie. Now if I can only get my wife to eat it!

never ate squirrel. Don't have very many where I'm at they are all in town...

:x Town squirrels might have access to pesticide and such anyway. Availability, species, and taste of squirrel is definitively something geographical. My woods are full of black walnut, shagbark and pignut hickories, and all sorts of acorn.

yep! don't wanna touch the town squirrels! or town pigeons! don't wanna be eating anything that might have been picking though puke at the bar.

lots of doves though! might get a ringneck and try that out...
