One of my NZW does has blood on her back end, under her tail. I noticed a 2"x2" fresh blood smear on her resting board, with a few droplets scattered. I don't physically see anything that looks out of the ordinary on her back end when I flipped her.

She's bred, and her day 28 isn't until Oct. 4th. I'm wondering if this is the signs of aborting? She's eating, drinking, and acting normally.

Thanks ladysown and Maggie. She's fine this morning, she ate everything she was given, even the extra hay, and drank alot. No signs anything is wrong. Do they just spot like that sometimes maybe? I've never seen blood before birthing before.

Are you sure it's blood? Sometimes rabbits will have red urine from excess beta carotene in their diet. It's very watery but very red.

It's disturbing to see, to say the least.

I'm pretty sure it was blood, it wasn't watery at all, and it was fresh. It was all over the underside of her tail, and on her nose as well.

i find that when they abort everything is cleaned up. The only thing you might find is an afterbirth.

Yup, that is what I was thinking...she aborted and then ate all the aftermath. That may be why she had blood on her nose. :(

So she probably is no longer bred is what you are saying? Wouldn't there be more of a mess? Would I see more blood? I would assume the fetuses wouldn't be to terribly small if she was only 10 days away from kindling?

Normally, if the doe aborts, she will try to clean up (eat) the fetuses and placental material. This not only cleans up her nest, it gives her a much needed protein boost. Nature at its most efficient, if not prettiest. That said, we are only speculating.

If she has already aborted, she needs a rest before rebreeding. If she hasn't, she may abort at a later time. Or, she may continue her pregnancy and kindle around the expected time. I'd hope for the best and give her a nest box on Day 28.

Yes, I agree with you Maggie, we planned to wait, and just see what happens. If she has aborted, and doesn't kindle, how much time would it be best to give her before trying to rebreed?

Never had to deal with this, but I would think if you get to Day 36 with no kits and she seems in good health - eating, drinking and pooping normally, active and bright - that it would be okay to rebreed then.

I'm hoping she's still actually bred, she's starting to nest. Sure wish I knew what happened!

I hope she just was spotting. My NZW spotted just a few tiny bits two days before she kindled her 10 kits. The only reason I knew was that I had just changed the paper in her catch tray.
Hope the babies are here soon! :0

Well, it had to be just spotting, I know she is still bred, by the way she is carrying, and the way she is acting. Not to mention, she is HUGE! She's gotten strangely very mellow, and she's normally a very skittish doe. She's on day 32, so we shall see what happens pretty soon!

Just came in from evening chores, and the doe kindled 7 big kits! All her kits have been nice and big, she's a great doe. She's quite bloody though, and there's one little one that wasn't as active as I'd like, so we'll see what we find in the morning.

My hubby and brother were working in the barn all day, enclosing the rabbitry ceiling, she waited for them to leave, and then kindled when it was quiet. It wasn't more than an hour between when they came in, and I went out to do chores. :) Smart doe!
