I crossed my Gold Tipped Steel NZ buck with my new black NZ doe and got one white, one red and two black babies. Heat stroke got one of the blacks and the rew but the other two are just fine and growing.

But is the red a true red? He is lighter on his sides than our other reds but he sure is pretty.

With his parents his being red at all was a complete surprise!

It would be a red if both parents carried one non extension gene each. Also the Steel would have a self gene. Not sure how the steel gene will play out in that though.most likely it would be a steel carrier or the so-called "hidden steel"
