Or just a small brag....

Today we went to one of the first fall shows... Cobleskill, NY. It was a bit iffey even to go there with the recent flooding... but the roads were very good. ( that we were on anyway)

First show.... American Chins... DH's pride and joy doe went BOB !!! ( 23 Am. Chins shown !)
Blanc de Hotots... my pride and joy...( homebred) doe went BOB.
Pals... class placings.

Second show... Am. Chins... DH's P & J doe... BOS ! (Two legs today !!!)
Blanc de Hotots... my P & J BOB. (two legs today too ! )
Palominos... ...BOB and BOS !!! Both are homebreds ! both will get a leg today.

We might be a little bit tired... but we are so pleased !! ( oh... and we also had the requsite SCF visit for the show !! How i missed the very evident buckyness of that rabbit is startling !! lol.)

Congrats !!! Beautiful rabbits !!!

Are all rabbit shows that confusing or was it just this one because of the move & the show room being too small ? Yes, it was the first rabbit show I have ever been to except the fairs.

I do think that the substitute location had a lot to do with the confusion. I mean... a 'normal' show is confusing enough... but there were judges here... and judges there ... and some in a tent Way over there... ja... a bit confusing. But it Did seem to run quite well. ( and the weather was Good ! )

Tiny update. I love having double shows !! Sometimes a really nice and prime rabbit can pick up multiple legs in a day. While we didn't get BOB every time... With our Palominos... at the double shows we would win BOB at least one time. Usually at the other show that day we would get BOS. It is really amazing how different the rabbits will look depending on How the judge poses them ! They can look like totally different rabbits !

With DH's Am Chins...we did pretty good. Winning sometimes... placing othertimes. His favorite doe ended up with 2 BOBs and 2 BOSs. NY state Grand Finals had 35 American Chinchillas !!! It was Awesome . Beautiful rabbits .

NY show season is finished for the year. One Show left to go to......13 days and countng.....

First off, congratulations, RR- you both must be floating on air! Well done!

I've never been to a rabbit show- with dogs, the handlers set the dogs up and the judge looks the group over as a whole, and then each individual dog before they do their pattern.

Does the judge always position the rabbit or is that sometimes left to the handler? Are the rabbits ever viewed as a group? Or does the judge call back in the rabbits they liked if they are unsure of the clear winner?

? should I be posting those ?s under a different discussion so as not to "hijack" this thread? I fear I may be breaching forum etiquette, and if I'm doing it now, I know I've done it before! Please excuse me as I'm a total newbie to forums!

I will answer as best i can... At a Rabbit show...the judge works behind a table. On that table are 'holding coops'... small, like a carrier, "stalls" to hold each individual rabbit. Most judges will not look at the rabbits or watch the people bringing the rabbits to the table...This helps avoid 'politics' ( as You are aware from dog shows... ) The judge goes over each rabbit individually checking for disqualifications... then does what i call 'sorting' .. He ( or she) will rearrange the placing of the rabbits either from the least to the best... or the other way. ( a Good judge doing this sorting is fascinating to watch... amazing how one can begin to sense What he is looking for !) Then he will start from last place and give comments on each animal... some sorting can still go on until he finishes the class. The exhibitors are nt supposed to try and influence the judges decision. Nor are they supposed to indicate what rabbit might be their's.

this is done for each class in that variety of That breed. then the judge chooses the best of That Variety and the Best of the Opposite sex of that Variety. He will go thru all the varieties of that breed in this way... then all variety winners compete for Best of Breed and Best of the Opposite Sex of that Breed.

Have i confused You yet ?? There are some good things about showing and at times not so good... one never knows at most shows ( at least Here) Who will be judging. Sometimes one gets a judge that one really has issues with. Sometimes one gets a Super judge and learns a lot.

The sorting process and placement of varieties sounds much like what is done at dog shows, so no confusion here! I like the fact that the judge comments on the good and bad points of the animals. You usually have to approach judges after the fact at a dog show to get that type of input. One of these days I hope to exhibit my own stock, so having a basic understanding is important to me. Thanks!
