Yesterday I picked up a package deal that included an 8 month old tan. She came with a cage and carrier and tons of extras that I just couldn't pass up. She has a pedigree and I intend to take her to the rabbit show later this month to see how the judges like her. She seems sweet and is beautiful but I don't know much about the breed. I am looking for info. Is this more of a meat breed or a fancy breed? Any and all info would be great. Thanks

What information are you looking for? They are primarily a fancy breed weighing between 4-6lb at maturity. They come in four colors: Black, Chocolate and the dilutes Blue and Lilac. Most being shown are in the 4.5lb or so range. A few of my sr does are in the 5-5.5 range. They can be used for meat, but won't yield the same as a meat rabbit would. They are an active rabbit and when shown are judged moving on the table. It helps to practice with the rabbit prior to a shown to get them use to running the table. You don't want one that slinks down the table on its belly, or just sits there at a show. This can be accomplished as easy as setting a board up between two chairs and letting the rabbit get comfortable with moving up and down the board. Some good information can be found at the ATRSC website (American Tan Rabbit Specialty Club - http://www.atrsc.org/ ) Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks! We have her as a pet and to show. Are they generally a sweet breed? This little girl is. I know they have a lot of energy which is fine with us. Just out of curiosity what is the price range for this breed? We are thinking of looking for a buck in the future.

Generally the bucks are the sweeter of the two. The does once they reach maturity can get a little ornery at times, particularly when they're ready to breed. A general price range for brood quality is around 50-60, show is 60-125. Who's lines is yours out of?

She came from Jezuit rabbitry. I see a lot of a d&j and cullers on it too. Her sire is Jesuit sonic and her dam is maddies nova. Are you familiar with any of those?

I'm familiar with D&J, Cullers and Maddies. All are pretty well known Tan breeders on a national level. D&J Tans (Jodi Hartman), I have shown against and with her several times over the past year, most recently in Pennsylvania in early Feb at the PASRBA convention. D&J is out of New York state, Maddie is out of Michigan I believe and Culler (C&J Tans) is out of Ohio. Several of my rabbits carry some D&J lines in the background.
