Why do people want them looking compact? I understand strong shoulders, but dont you also want a long loin? Sorry if I have this way off, Im just confused (really need to buy the SOP book)

Who wants them compact? I think you are thinking of mini Rex, or have been confused by someone who does not know mini Rex from Rex. mini Rex are a compact breed, not Rex.

I realize that, but I was told by a breeder you want the shoulders to come straight from the neck, which to me seems compact.

I always wondered the same thing. I am used to wanting along loin in lambs and thinking you get more meat/chops that way. Glad you asked the question. I had someone say that they were supposed to look like volly balls :) I think it might be a fashion statement LOL.

Long shoulders are different than longer loins. You want the shoulders to come straight out and the rise to start right away, but in a commercial, it'll be a gentler rise to peak over the longer loin. A compact will be like a ball, rise start right away as well, but typically more dramatic as a short body and loin doesn't let it be as gradual. In both cases though, the shoulders should be short, and part of the rise, flat, narrow, or long shoulders should be avoided :).

Thank you Oceanrose. It's hard for me to explain. We want no neck, which means short shoulders, with the meat in the rear. Longer shoulder is an early peak, front loaded, with less in the loin and less in the hindquarters.
I hate when judges squeeze Rex together like mini Rex, They are essentially, because of shape, two different breeds, not a miniature of the other.

The higher a rise the longer a loin will be!So a higher rise in a commercial is not to be sneared at! In commercial the shoulders are only slightly narrower than the hips.. it makes for a very hard to see wedge shape, where the Mini's are the same width all through with an equal rise. So yes those shoulders are very important to the total package as oceanrose has said.
