I am so excited I could scream! I got seven kits, mostly blue, some black!!!!!! They are so cute and I am so proud of Lovey. I didn't even think she'd have them! I thought I'd have to send her back!! I am just so HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!! Now I hope they all live and she takes care of them. They are a bit skinny; their ribs are showing. Is that bad? They're like 10 hours old.

-- Mon May 19, 2014 6:22 pm --

Do you think I should hold them or should I wait a day or two just to be safe? I don't think she likes me around them that much.

Lovey is your Silver Fox right? She should be a great mom!! It is my understanding that it can take up to 24hrs? for the does milk to come in so they should be fine. She sure pulled a LOT of fur! SO CUTE :p if possible you could pull the nest box out to handle them. That's what I do with my one doe that doesn't seem to like my hand in there

Last time she pulled so much fur she didn't have any more. Of COURSE last time she didn't actually have any kits.

That's not even all the fur she pulled; I took most of it out so I could get a clear picture.

-- Mon May 19, 2014 6:30 pm --

And yes she is my SF. The lighter kits are blue and the darker are black right? Lovey is blue and Softfall (the dad) is black, so the kits can only be blue and black, correct? And we have more blue than black because Softfall is Bb and Lovey is, of course, bb.

Yes, the lighter ones are blue... I had to do a double take at the pics because at first I could only see the black ones. The blue blended right in with Momma's fur! :p with the heritage bred SF you should only get blue and black.

I found the thread. I tried to sex some today, but they are SO WIGGLY! I only determined that two of them are a blue buck (going as meat since I don't have use for blue) and black doe (yay!). I loved holding them, but when I put the nestbox back in, she hopped in there right away. I hope she was nursing them and not eating them.

Anyway, I marked the buck's ear with a red permanent marker.

Question: when Itouch them they squeak and jerk their head around. It looks like they have NO control over their body movements. Is this bad?

Congrats on your babies! I think they jerk because they can't see yet and they are hoping you are momma's belly. lol

Okay, good to know. I have sexed 5 of the 8 bunnies and so far I have: a super sweet blue buck that I've unfortunately (since I can't keep him) fallen in love with, a black buck, a blue doe (she is bleeding out of her reproducing area, is that a problem?), and two black does.

Don't count out ANY of the kits at this point- sexing at such a young age is notoriously difficult. Have you heard of the Sex Change Fairy, so hated around here?

Yes I have, and the dreaded SCF that you speak of has visited me already.

I looked at the pictures Sexing Newborn Kits and matched up my kits. It was actually pretty easy...too easy... :?

Anyway, is that kit going to be all right? She had blood oozing out of her "area". My mom said that could be because (in humans) sometimes when the mother has a girl, the girl gets too much hormones.

Congratulations! I can't wait to see the pictures when they start getting fur! We're new to rabbits, but we've handled both of our does new litters a couple times each day. We have the Sani-nests, which are attached under the bottom of the does cages, so it's really easy to just slide the nest box out. Neither of our does has protested, and we always give them a nutritious treat when we put the kits back! We are not above bribery. :D

We've handled each kit a couple times each day - today we noticed that the three day old kits will curl right up in our hand now, they don't do the crazy scrabbling around as much. I think they're already becoming accustomed to being handled.

Awww!!! Yeah, my kits still scrabble around but they'll probably stop when they realize I'm not mamas belly. Today's day 3 and they've stopped wiggling so much but they're still squirmy little munchkins.

-- Thu May 22, 2014 1:24 pm --

Update, I haven't lost any kits, all 8 have survived thus far. I am, however, worried about a runty little girl whose brother is nearly 2 times her size. She got cold last night but I warmed her up, and she keeps wandering away from the others. And the largest blue doe has blood oozing out of her reproductive area. Could she have been scratched by siblings or bit by momma?

Well it stopped now, so we're good.

Here's more pics. Black doe is my favorite baby and the one I might keep, blue buck is my fourth favorite baby.

Cute! Ours pee on us regularly! I've learned to have a piece of a paper towel in my hand when I first pick them up, and keep it close by at all times!
