Had to share this as it was the most amazing thing ever!

Loooooooong story short, had a doe with eyes so badly gummed up that I had to wash them out every day just to keep them open. All the skin was gone from around them and it was all red and inflamed. Would have put her down but, you know the thing, BEST doe with kits kind of thing so I kept working on it. Come late summer, still bad, babies grown enough not to need her so I think to myself, if I can just keep you going till you get your winter coat you wont be a dead loss.

So I put her at my mums place in the salt air, hoping it might help but nope, no change until my mum said "Why not try Vaseline on it? It cant hurt and might make her feel better."

OVERNIGHT a well rubbed in fingerfull of Vaseline cleared her eyes of gunk and, after using it for 5 days, the hair started growing back.

Now, 6 weeks later, you would never know she had ever had a problem.

YAY!

That is really interesting. It makes me wonder if it didn't start with something irritating her eyes and she just kept rubbing it which exacerbated the problem.

I'm glad you got it sorted!

Interesting... though not recommended, since it is not an "ophthalmic" ointment, I have known people to treat kitten "nestbox eye" with neosporin. It is largely petroleum jelly as well. :?

Either alforddm has it right, and she had scratched the corneas- in which case I would take a good look at her eyelashes to be sure they are not growing into the eyes- or the vaseline smothered the bacteria so it could not survive.

*Edited to add: I think by now if she did in fact have entropian eyelids, the lashes would already be irritating the eyes... so the vaseline must have smothered the bacteria and/or protected the corneas so they could heal.

In any case, thank you for sharing. Sometimes in desperation we try things we normally wouldn't with excellent results. :) Now the members of RT have yet another treatment in our collective arsenal! :p

:thankyou:
