I have a broken kit in a nest box.. and the parents are ( dam) is a REW.. background on her are... chocolate and REw . grandparents are ... sable, black, tortoiseshell, rew.

The sire is a blue tort
his parents are . broke black and chocolate,
grandparents are .. chestnut, rew, chocolate,black..

Now I thought the parents had to have a broken gene in order to get a broke kit..

explain to me how this might of happened. I got a broken black ,blue tort, chocolate, black,

Your REW is a broken "something".

REW hides their true color, just like when you put a white sheet over a couch. The couch appears to be white, but underneath the sheet it can be any color. :)

Then the REW dam must be a booted broken as was her REW parent.

Unless this is a new spontaneous mutation which is how all the colours we have today were created :D

Check the Sire over VERY carefully. Even ONE white spot, even one the size of a pin head, means he is a broken and your culprit. Have to go over with a very fine toothed comb as it could be hiding any where. It means very heavily marked broken, which can and does happen.

well. I will find out who is doing it next month.. as I breed everyone to this buck. so if I get more than one litter of brokens than I know it is him.. But I doubt it.. If I get another broken from the Rew doe.. then I know it is her for sure.. But sure is a mystery when you get things like this.. I might not even get another broken from the same breeding.. Time will tell.

HERE IS A UPDATE TO THIS POST
That doe had her babies last night .. I wasn't sure who was carrying the broken gene.. It is this doe.. she has at least 3 broken in her litter this time.. Yaaahooo.. and a lot better mom this time. She made the nest and pulled fur.. I have to wait and see if she feeds them.. but looks good so far.

Thanks for the update. Will you let the breeder know her two REW does are secretly brokens? I'm sure she'd appreciate it.

These ones look like they have the more typical broken pattern so the buck must have the booted modifiers that gave you the first mystery kit.

I keep all the brokens that I can get.. I really like them. Looks like so far, I have a good start with brokens to work with.

yaaaa. she is feeding them.. yes..

I checked the other litter today.. and there was one that had wool tight around its neck.. it was so tight that its head look like a balloon.. I cut it off.. but I don't think it is going to live.

Oh no! Poor little thing  I put cotton wool in with my fancy mice once (long long ago now) for nesting material and got lots of amputations and deaths due to its doing the same thing. Ugh, its an awful thing! Never though of it with their own wool though.
