six weeks of classes.

30-40 minutes in length each class

Now...what do I teach them?

How do I best organize the materials?

HELP! I need to submit a lesson plan!!!! ACK!

oh...age range will be 8-12 years.

I plan to have a litter or two bred that I can bring along to each class so the children can watch them grow. AND hopefully have some piggies available at the same time.. but no guarantees on them. :)

Wow what a great idea. Where are you holding the classes? Have you already got students lined up? I'm very interested to know how it goes and what you will be teaching. Would love to help you out with the lessen plan, but out grandchildren still think when we put the doe in with the buck that it is their play time together.

A few off the cuff thoughts, no particular order...

The Nature of Rabbits (exploding the cute and cuddly myth and giving the kids realistic expectations.)
Handling Rabbits (safe ways to pick up and hold a rabbit so neither child or bunny gets hurt.)
Your Rabbit's House (cage/pen)
Playing with your Rabbit (fun and hazards of free running house bunnies, safe rabbit toys etc.)
Feeding Your Rabbit (what bunny should and should not eat)
What your Rabbit is Saying. (see http://language.rabbitspeak.com/ and don't try to teach it all.)
Showing Respect for Your Rabbit's Needs
Young Owner's Guide to Showing Rabbits.

Okay, I'm out for the moment... but might give you someplace to start.

are you trying to incorporate other academic areas? Feed to gain ratios, weighing kits, differences from week to week- changes in coat texture and color as the animal matures- how does the coat insulate the rabbit? How do the rabbits interact with each other, how do they react when something strange is introduced?

All kinds of animal behaviour and math!!!

I would place a lot of emphasis on proper housing, care' handling and feeding.
Use lots of hands on items and posters. You want to draw their attention.
Bring a small packet [plastic baggie] of pelleted rabbit feed,
a small bundle of grass-hay. Explain the reasons and necessity for
what you feed and what is proper to do.
Demonstrate the proper way to pick-up and carry a Rabbit.
Perhaps show how to and the importance of trimming a rabbits nails.
This will lead you into discussing some of the Diseases a rabbit
may come in contact with and some of the possible ways to treat them
and what diseases are not treatable/incurable.
Make a guide line so you do not slip off the track.
The things you can teach/talk about are limitless.
I hope this helps somewhat.[ Email me if I can be of any further help.]
Ottersatin. :eek:ldtimer:

4H??
do they have a course, try googling it, read what you find and then see what you want to rip off, er, 'integrate' into your presentation (I did adult education...)
I would structure it like life, whether from preparing to bringing a pet home, or setting up a breeding/meat operation to the 'end' of life of the rabbit. Whether in the stew pot or sold to the next guy.

So I think I've come up with a basic outline

day One
Rabbits: what are they, what are their relatives etc.
Breed of the day: Polish
Language of the day: Need for Speed
Activity of the day: Rabbit jumping?
Caring for a rabbit: Carrying, handling,

Day Two
Breed of the day: Mini Rex
Language of the day: Anger – ears down and back – angry rabbit proceed with caution.
Activity of the day: showing
Caring for a rabbit: feed: pelleted vs non-pelleted diet

Day Three
Breed of the day: Holland lop
Language of the day: Ears forward: happy rabbit, curious
Activity of the day: Rabbit agility
Caring for a rabbit: housing – bedding, space, litter training etc

Day Four
Breed of the day: Harlequin
Language of the day: territoriality - scenting marking, dropping pellets, spraying etc
Activity of the day: Meat rabbits
Caring for a rabbit: basic care: nail trimming, health check

Day Five
Breed of the day: New Zealand
Language of the day: the relaxed rabbit: lounging, sleeping like dead etc.
Activity of the day: fur industry
Caring for a rabbit: safe bunny toys

Day Six
Breed of the day: Guinea pigs and hamsters and mice etc.
Language of the day: ??? not sure, what to have it something transferrable to other species as well... thoughts?????
Activity of the day: Companion animal
Caring for your companion animal: basics of feed, bedding, water etc.

For a 9-12 year old group

what do you think?
am I missing anything???
what can I add?

anyone know of any good activity sheets?

Wow you have put alot of thought and detail into the planning. I really like the setup with the introduction of a different breed everyday. I am sure the children will be fascinated to learn so much about rabbits, I know I would be.
Lets see 4+7=11 years old do I qualify....Oh well I tried. :)

:) of course you qualify. I did say I didn't care what the age of the children were that came. * year olds could come... as long as they LISTEN and won't grab at my bunnies when I bring them out it's all good to me. the rest is just talking bunnies. :)
