I uploaded images in my gallery.... I processed my first rabbit today and the liver was covered with white stuff!!! I have other rabbits... what is it??? I am freaking out right now....help! :x

I believe it is coccidia. I had something similar a while back. I have processed at least 50 rabbits since and have not seen it again.

Discard the liver. Don't let your animals eat it- even though coccidia is thought to be pretty host-specific, it is not worth the risk. The meat, cooked properly, is safe to eat.

What will happen with my other rabbits?? I am really thinking twice about raising rabbits.... I know I am still freaked out a lot...

Just relax. It's very few of us who haven't seen coccidiosis in some of our rabbits on occasion. It is caused by a protozoal parasite and is quite easy to treat. Sorry I can't remember the name of the medication, but someone will chime in with it, I'm sure.

Raising any kind of animal is not going to be trouble-free all of the time. You may want to familiarize yourself with the most common problems so you are in a better position to recognize them. Very few rabbit diseases pose a danger to people and those few are ones you are unlikely to encounter.

:yeahthat:

Coccidia is an extremely common parasite in every species. It's simple and inexpensive to treat. It doesn't "spread" like a virus or bacteria, and must be acquired through ingestion, either of infected feces or tainted feed.

Thank you all so much. One more question.... will I need to treat my dogs?? I caught them a couple of times eating the poop... (its like chocolate to them or something)

I wouldn't worry about treating the dogs unless they are severely immuno-compromised. There are many different types of coccidia, and they have developed to parasitize specific species. Dogs most commonly have Isospora canis and I. ohioensis, but adult dogs have a level of immunity to them. It can be dangerous in puppies, however. Rabbits can carry 12 different strains of Eimeria, but very few cause disease.
