I am posting this for a fellow breeder of guinea pigs.

He has about 10 pigs unaffected AT THIS TIME.

he has over the last month lost three breeding sows.

1. first sow: on pups, lost some hair, started losing weight, got very lethargic but caught her in time, brought her in the house, got her eating lots of greens etc. She came back just fine, then about three weeks later went downhill very fast - got lethargic and snotty nosed and died with 24 hours.

2. noticed not eating right, sneezy, some nasal discharge, very four smell, lethargic and dead within 12 hours.

3. noticed sneezing, few days later lost her litter born two months premature. Foul smell. went lethargic and dead by morning.

First two pigs on guinea pig food the entire time, pig number three on rabbit feed and greens for the past two weeks.

Says his remaining pigs are fine: no symptoms, it's a very quick from noticing symptoms to death.

THAT is the information I was given as per text. All I did was clean up the typing errors and add a numbering system.

Any hints as to what is going on with them?

This is a young man, don't think he has the money to bring them to the vet. it's outside my paradigm of experience.. though I'm thinking he's got a couple things going on with a illness and toxicity or some sort.

__________ Fri Jun 22, 2012 6:01 am __________

ah.....but I do wish someone had some sort of ideas....

Guinea pigs develop very thick puss in response to bacterial infections which makes them go downhill very quickly with minimal warning signs. I would put the whole herd on a round of baytril if it can be afforded http://www.ladygouldianfinch.com/product_baytril.php . Oral Dosage: 2.5-10.0 mg/kg q12h Otherwise I would use tetracyclines as soon as they show symptoms but tetracyclines are not suggested for guinea pigs normally. None of the cheap feed store antibiotics are because guinea pigs are too sensitive to antibiotics but if it comes down to that or nothing it's worth a shot. A probiotic would be required.

Scurvy causes a slow decline in health with steady weight loss and eventual hind leg paralysis. It doesn't lead to a fast death without weeks of warning.

GPs go down in health very fast, it's really not something you should pussy foot around with. He has to act fast at the very first signs or they will start dropping like flies!
Get him to find an exotic vet he can make friends with to help with drugs and to take at least one pig in for testing to get the right drugs to give to everyone.
