I love when forums have these 'alternate animal' threads. I love showing off my other bbies.

Anyway, lets get to it!

I have:
4 dogs
3 cats
1 horse
1 guinea pig
7 rats
and three fish ( though I use to hobby breed. :()

Here's some various pictures of them and then a little surprise at the end:

And now that those boring animals are out of the way (Jk bbies momma loves you! D: )

My mom rescues wildlife. She's had various critters and has her license to take them in and handle them. Well, my favorite were always the Raccoon:

But she also took in 'normal' animals such as mini horses:

So yes. Its a funny farm here... And now we're gonna add rabbits!

And finally... When I say I use to 'hobby breed' fish... I mean I was addicted:

Hopefully the rabbits will be as spoiled as my fish were.

(Ah, who am I kidding- they will be.)

What a bunch of sweet fur babies you have! Who won the tug of war, you or the horse?
Years ago I did wildlife rehab. It was alot of fun. We did racoons early on back in the '80s but after that we weren't allowed because of rabies. They are neat critters. :)
My personal favorite were ground hogs. I still love them, wish I had some on my property. Very cool critters! :D

If raccoons are still on the property when the rabbits arrive, be very sure that the rabbits are entirely, completely, absolutely safe. I actually read recently, in a rabbit care book!, that raccoons "aren't interested" in rabbits since they're (raccoons) mostly "fruit and vegetable" eaters.

Bullfeathers. Hogwash. And other animal-based phrases.

Raccoons are determined, nimble, and dextrous predators. Once they know a food source is out there, they'll stop at nothing except absolutely impregnable defenses.

My now sister-in-law, then co-worker and good friend, had a sweet rabbit she kept in a nice hutch (spacious, weather-proof, good sun and privacy) in her yard. She visited the rabbit several times a day (before work, after work, evening, plus extras on the weekend). She couldn't bring the rabbit into her house because of her asthma. She knew there were raccoons in the area (they're all over the place in the Bay Area), so she had a locksmith install a "raccoon-proof" hasp and lock.

Only to come home one day to fragments of fur and rabbit body. :(

Another friend had a duck who helped her in gardening tasks by finding snails and slugs and eating them. These are major gardening pests in the Bay Area; the duck definitely earned its keep and then some. Again, knowing about raccoons, this friend ran her security plans by a locksmith. "Looks good" was his verdict.

Right up until the morning she found feathers and fragments of duck in the yard. :(

Do everything you can to keep raccoons and rabbits far from one another, and protect the rabbits as much as you possibly can.

Hope it all works out.

Great critters, Lilacpetals! Thanks for sharing the pictures. :)

Of course, my favourites are the kitties. Koi's picture, especially, just makes me want to scoop and hug. My Marilla (my avatar cat who rules our lives) would be quite miffed if she knew.

Thank you guys! I'm sure they'd all appreciate their compliments. As for who won? My horse did. :( My mom considered defeat after he laid down. LOL. But yes, the rabbit hutches we plan on building ourself and we have been watching the returning rescues play around with old cages. What we've decided to do is 'double cage' and essentially put a cage within a cage. Cageception!

And padlocks. Lots of padlocks.

I had a thought- maybe house a raccoon (If we get one next year) INSIDE of the rabbit hutch(Before the rabbits of course!). If he cant get out, maybe one can't get in? LOL!

The problem with raccoons is that they will reach into cages (even 1"x1" wire), grab the curious rabbit and pull it to the wire, eating it live as they go. I once lost a chick that way and the bars of the pen were only 3/4 of an inch apart. Hot night, full moon. I heard the hen shrieking and ran out. Chick was dead and half eaten. I popped the top half of a solid bottom cage over the hen and remaining chicks so the raccoon couldn't reach them again that night. The raccoon came back and finished eating the dead chick. They are resourceful and relentless... so do not think an ordinary rabbit cage or hutch is protection enough.
