how might a PET person treat them?

sold a kit about two weeks ago. I know it's not from me since I medicate before I send them off if I know for sure they are going to a pet home, and it had no signs of having them when it was here. I know the bunny has been in the new owners backyard and all over the place so it may have picked them up anywhere.

It looks like it might have fur mites.

How might she treat it?
Does not want to go to the vet (funds are tight).

What can she find over the counter at Pet Smart that might do the trick for her?
What medicinal ingredient do I have her look for?

NOTE: I'm in Canada.. so Canadian med names would be helpful. :)

can't they be treated topically with ivermectrin? it would be in sheep drench for instance...I have used it that way, sort of like you would put advantage on a dog, back of the neck...

What do you use that a pet person couldn't?

pet person doesn't have ready access to ivermectin much less sheep dip. Big city Ontario... she has to make do with what she can get at the local pet store if she doesn't want to go to a vet.

huh. Sorry, here I guess it is rural enough that everybody has access to those things, though they might not know where to find them....and there is always online ordering. I wonder what the HRS recommends--probably a vet visit, huh?

We bought a buck that came with mites, and it spread. We used Ivermectin. My vet insisted we do oral doses, he said topical wouldn't be as effective, but we have multiple rabbits, and the does would lick it off the kits. He was right. We treated orally, and it worked. 3 doses, 14 days apart.

You can buy it over the counter at a farm supply store. I just did a quick search, and it looks like you have TSC stores in Ontario, and they have Ivomec. It says injectable, but we used it orally.

If they don't have multiple animals, it may work as a topical treatment. On single adults in a cage, it worked just fine topical, right behind the base of the skull.

One can Also bathe the rabbit in Dawn dish detergent-(blue) Not sure about other Detergents-- -, use a cat shampoo that is pyrethrin or D-limolene based ( as for fleas)

Food-grade diatomaceous earth works, as well. You rub a generous amount into the fur I think once a week, for four treatments (or is it six?).

It is very messy, and if he's in the house, it will get everywhere (think of rabbit fur full of baby powder!).

The cage would need to be dusted with it, too.

And the outside run area would need to be treated too as that is most likely the source of the infestation. Or, keep the bunny off the ground ... my guess would be a feral cat population as the true source of the mites.
