Can anyone tell me what would make the blue/grey eyes of a frosty Holland lop have a red tint to her pupils? Is this a fault? She is a scanner too. Hereditary? Thanks!

Your frosty is likely to be shaded and not chinchilla if she has a red cast - not sure if it's a DQ

Hummmm.... I had a shaded frosty that was a "scanner" (current one is normal) but she had a obvious malformation of her pupils, so likely genetic.

Thanks for your reply Dood, can you tell me a little more about what shaded frosty means and what colors this frosty would be best to breed with? I am just learning all of this, so hard to understand! His pupils look a bit large I would say, don't know if that means anything. He has a great head and bone though. I wonder if it is a DQ. Hmmm

There are two genes that can turn fawn/orange rabbits into frosties and they are both on the C-locus, the more dominant one is chinchilla (AKA dark shaded) and the less dominant is shaded (AKA light shaded) which is also responsible for turning blacks into sables and torts into sable points.

It's tricky to test breed since chinchilla and shaded agoutis can be hard to tell apart :(

Do you have any info of the parents, litter mates or offspring?

My frosty also had terrific form and came from a long line of champions - who I later learned were also scanners :groooan: since the breeder didn't think it was something to worry about - and really it isn't but I am a pretty heavy handed with culling and didn't want to pass on the defect. She was quite skittish as well but I think because her vision was defective as once you had a hold of her she calmed right down and loved cuddles :)

I breed Mini Lops and any colour is accepted :D

I am waiting for the pedigree to be sent, I was going to use this frosty in my agouti program. Preferably for more frosty as well as chins

__________ Mon Sep 22, 2014 10:31 pm __________

This little guy is very sweet, very cuddly and easy to work with, I really don't want to breed other scanners, I didn't know he was when I got him
