I asked this in the wool section but I thought I would ask here too because understanding the genetics is important to me too.

If I cross our French Angora doe - marked like a Californian - to a New Zealand buck - choices are red and gold tipped steel - what would we get?

The cali could be any colour under her white coat - do you know colours of her other kits, her parents, her siblings or neices and nephews?

If not, then most Cali's are genetically chestnut or gold tipped steel (AKA steel chestnut) and many also carry the steel gene.

If you breed her to a red, the kits will likely be all chestnut but carry the gene that turns this colour red so if bred back to dad you would get some red kits in the litter.

If you breed to the gold tipped steel you would get some gold tipped steel, some chestnuts and possibly super steels which can look very dark with just a bit of gold ticking or even pure black.

Da da daa dada daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Its SUPER STEEL! Able to cover many does at a single try!

Sorry, must be more tired than I thought, glad I am alone as people might wonder at me laughing like a mad woman at my own humor!

No history on this doe at all, not a clue. She was just dumped in the rabbit barn. You would think they would have left a note or SOMETHING but nope, just left her and went.

So, red it is! And we shall see how they look if and when we get any kits.

And when did you sneak in here and snap a picture of my Goof Ball? It must be true that rabbits all look alike.

My buck NZ Blackavar is a steel and produces quite a rainbow of colours when bred to my American Chinchillas.

Yep yep yep! Goof Ball gives us a rainbow when crossed with our amchin doe AND we have discovered he throws red with our so called "black" New Zealand doe! His first red offspring - named Surprise - was old enough to breed 9 weeks ago so put him to his mum.

We got two fantastic reds, one very red blond, one that LOOKS black and one white that may be cali marked or rew, not sure yet but am tending tward cali.

The anoying thing with the amchin cross is if its his color or chestnut of any shade, HIS personality comes through nice and strong but if its HER color, her kits are basket cases, just like she is.

Rather a pest really as I would LOVE a sweet tempered amchin :(

THOUGHT I was going to get one from my youngest brothers father in law but his FANTASTIC chinchilla doe got loose in the woods and has never been seen since. So much for a kit from her
