I have 2 does that both gave birth yesterday. Reflections has had 2 stillborn litters of 5 each. Then yesterday at 6am I went out to 9 wiggly kits! She had made a nest but didn't add much fur. So I added more fur. I left them be. Around 5pm my other doe, Amy, had 6 wiggly kits. Amy has had 3 other litters(9 in the first, 9 in the second and 8 in the third). She has never lost a kit so I know she is an excellent mom and produces lots of milk.

I brought all the kits in last night because it was supposed to get really cold. Took them all out this morning to nurse. Amy hopped right in to nurse her kits. Reflections didn't even act interested. I brought Amy's kits back in but left reflection's kits out for a couple hours in hopes she would nurse. I just went out to check them and they still appear to have not been fed. There are a couple runts that are really tiny and starting to grow weak.

I'm wondering if I should foster some of reflection's kits over to Amy. But I'm not sure which ones. Should I attempt to foster the runts to Amy and hope Reflection's will start nursing the other kits? Or should I foster over a couple of the bigger kits and not worry too much about the runts? I'm just worried that no matter who I foster over, the kits staying with reflection's won't make it. I can't expect or ask Amy to nurse 15 kits! For an angora, 8-9 kits is already a big litter.

I wish I had the time to hand raise but I just don't. I am a stay at home momma to 3 boys under the age of 6. We homeschool and have other animals to tend to. But I don't want to sit and watch as the kits slowly die from starvation :(<br /><br />__________ Thu Feb 21, 2013 9:23 am __________<br /><br />Oh and I've tried holding her over the kits but she flips out. She isn't one to easily flip either. She almost seems really stressed out about the whole having babies thing. I've added parsley and red raspberry leaf to her feed. I've also coated oats in blackstrap molasses.

When I foster if there are colors I'm wanting to save I pick them. If colors are not an issue and it looks like the momma won't be feeding them I'd foster the strongest, since the others may not make it anyway.
Also, when I want the doe to nurse kits that look unfed, I hold HER on my lap with the box on the ground next to me and another basket where I can put kits. I flip her with her head toward my belly so I can control her. Then I express a little from each nipple to get it started. Then I take the kits one at a time and hold them so they won't get knocked on the ground, still soothing her, while moving from nipple to nipple. Then I put the fed ones in the basket so I know which ones still need to be fed. Sometimes this gets the momma going, sometime it doesn't.

Would it be too much to alternate the kits? I could put the 9 in with Amy tonight for the night feeding. Then continue to alternate? I still plan to encourage Reflections to nurse. So I will put the other set of kits in with her. Tonight when DH gets home I do plan to try flipping reflections. I'll have to wear protective gear!

Alternating the kits is a good idea. Amy's kits will nurse more vigorously from Reflections which may help bring her milk in.

I have alternated the last 2 feelings. There are 3 runts out of the 15 kits and they weren't getting much, if any. So I let them nurse from both momma's this morning and now their little bellies are nice and round. All 15 have nice round bellies! I did watch reflections nurse on her own last night but this morning she wasn't interested so I held her over them and gave her a parsley treat. When she finished all 9 kits had round bellies. I have hope! Thanks all!

You will keep us updated on how this goes? That is a gracious plenty of kits!!! Congrats to both mommas!

All 15 are still going strong! Well one of the runts is catching up to the others, the other 2 runts are still quite small but they are still getting full bellies and are just as active as the others! Ive been giving Amy her kits plus the 2 runts from reflection's litter for the morning feeding and giving the remaining 7 to reflections. Then I switch for night feeding but have kept the 2 tiny runts with Amy. Amy fills up all the kits each time. Reflections must not make as much milk because they never look quite as full after she nurses and sometimes one or two still look unfed. I'm keeping a close eye on everyone!

I have a runt in a litter right now and each time I bring the nest boxes in and unload them after feeding, I am surprised that such a small kit can get in there and fight for his fair share LOL

Sorry to hear the one runt died :( It is so sad when they don't get a chance at life :grouphug:
