Can anyone recommend a food saver machine for general use? I'd like to be able to use both the ready-made bags and the rolls. Is it best to get the Food Saver brand, or are there other brands that are better (or just as good but less expensive)?

I bought a very basic Food Saver brand vacuum sealer, the V2244. It is my first vacuum sealer. The Food Saver website usually has pretty good deals, but you have to look for them. I got a 37% off and free shipping by finding an online coupon code. I haven't had mine for too long, so I can't remark on reliability, It functions well. I bought a bunch 8" rolls. You can fit a rabbit in it, but not a pork roast. Actually, the kit came with a bunch of different things to try out.

Hope this helps!

I have the food saver. I got the middle one that my Wal-Mart carried. Love it. You can use the zip-Lock brand supplies also (again at Wal-Mart. They only carry the Food Saver brand and the Zip-Lock brand at my store).

I know of someone who has one that will vacuum seal bread without smashing it, and I sure wish I knew the brand name!!!

I have got a old Food Saver Model Vac350 and I like it. I have had it for about 10 years and it still doing a good job. I have to put a paper towel in the bag on top of the rabbit to keep it from sucking any juice into the machine.
I have never seen one that would not crush bread. If I put a aluminum can in a vacuum bag and seal it, it will crush it.

Also, if you dehydrate or plan to, you might want to consider getting the jar sealer rings ... the large and the small ones.
