Went out this morning, with a nice sharp knife, and cut dandelions, plantain, and grasses for the buns--Rascal wasn;t quite sure- but he did eat nicely-- the MR boys and Wilma went to town-- Now, as for Marsha and her kits-- what a sight!!! The kits had a ball, trying to emulate their mother--one finally said 'the heck with this' and dove under to grab something from the milk truck. One little fella- he has the shortes face-- really gave things the college try-- and was really looking good, until Mom snatched the grass stem from him-- So he grabbed a dandelion flower... which mom grabbed--

And sonice tocatch one of the kits drinking from the water bottle this morning :)

So nice to see the buns enjoying the first spring greens - especially the youngsters. I've been foraging on their behalf for a while now, but this weekend was the first they got more than a nibble. Our season is behind yours, Terry, but I've been finding dandelions, alfalfa, clover, curly dock and Queen Anne's lace. Yarrow and shepherd's purse are up but a bit too small to bother with yet.

The cleavers (Galium aparine) came up in a carpet over one area of the yard this year and I just noticed they had gotten tall enough to pick so mine are enjoying cleavers and some of the tough grasses from the edge of the field. I will be sad when we move and lose all the free forage around here. There's all sorts of edible wildflowers, wild raspberry, and an entire field full of "weeds" that has been growing wild as a wildlife area for 30years now. The fields by my horse stable are much more cultivated so most of the wildflowers are gone and only the more invasive and generally toxic stuff has survived between the planted fields.
