So, I have a NZW kit that has a slightly tilted head...it is about 6wks old and in the cage with mom and two other kits. No one else seems affected. The doe DID have ear mites, which I treated. I am thinking that this is related to ear mites in the inner ear, as opposed to E. cuniculi...

I gave it some Ivermectin paste, as I do not have the injectable. How soon should I see improvement? or will I? Should I just cull it now? Leaning toward culling it....

When I treated my buck for wry neck it took about 3 days after the ivermectin to see improvement.

Good to know....I will give it till the weekend. If I don't see any improvement by then, it will be culled. Thanks, Lindsey!

Are your NZWs pedigreed, too? Right now I have cheep, meat mutts to learn. But, you are the closest breeder to me, that has the pedigreed St. Rex breed, that I am 'currently' (last 3 months, have mini rex, now) interested in.

The NZW are only partially pedigreed. They are lacking a 3rd generation...I should have them fully pedigreed in 6mos-1yr. There is another Rex breeder in Houston, Trinity Oaks, and a lady moving from Idaho to Victoria, Texas soon.

I would wait because I'm curious to see what happens. I lost of litter of mini rex, head slightly titled, I didn't know what was going on until it happened, so I just culled them all. Now I'm wondering.

I think I will...just to see what happens. It does not seem to be in pain, it is hopping around, eating and drinking like normal.

I treated everyone with ivermectin when we got it. The others are infected if that one is they just aren't showing symptoms. Only the odd rabbit shows symptoms. Sometimes ivermectin by itself fixes it and sometimes it doesn't and you need steroids. For ours it didn't and I wasn't going to go through vet bills for a meat rabbit so I put it down after 2 weeks. Ours was at the rolling stage though and it got out of the rolling stage in the first week then didn't improve anymore. If they aren't so bad they are rolling over trying to get around or react to things you have a much better chance of the ivermectin by itself working. Oh I also pulled all the kidneys when I butchered that set and threw them out because the illness hides in the kidneys before going to the brain.

Hmm, after reading thru Barbi's site again, I don't really think I will mess with it. I am going to cull it tonight. It is just not worth the time and effort for one single meat rabbit.

Has it been shaking its head at all? Dogs and cats shake their heads when they have mites, and I imagine rabbits would too. I'd take a quick peek at the ears, and then if they are clear I would cull it too.

I did look at the ears and aside from some very slight something WAY down deep (I could barely see it) there wasn't really anything to see. I just don't want to have to keep treating this rabbit.

The only treatment i did for a severely effected rabbit that couldn't even stand was two doses of ivermectin one week apart. He recovered completely. Barbi goes over many treatments and worse case scenarios on her site.

If you are gonna cull anyway try a few drops of rubbing alcohol or diluted peroxide (this can cause problems if the infection is inner ear) in the ears for a couple days and see what happens. It could still be an ear infection.

I have already treated it with Ivermectin and I will give it till the weekend to improve. IF not, I will cull...here is a pic...

Did his ear droop before? I haven't seen enough pics of wryneck to know if that is characteristic of the disease... but I am leaning toward an infection or ear mites.

Have you tried flushing the ear? A simple recipe for an ear cleaning solution is one part white vinegar to two parts water. This site has a more complex recipe as well for treating infections:
