I had this "happy accident" of a blue tort doe x black buck producing a lilac elop doe. One doe is not really helpful for test breeding for more chocolate carriers. :| I happen to have a lynx FA buck. Wouldn't he be useful for test breeding the self elops to determine who is carrying chocolate quickly? Not sure how hard it would be to recognize a choc or lilac in agouti, since I've not really worked with those colors. All rabbits are made of meat at my house so no concern about crossing breeds really.

Would it be better to spend money on a self chocolate rex, or something to do the test breeding?

Breeding to the black buck should produce 25% chocolate or lilac since he must carry dilute/blue and chocolate to father a lilac.

you would be getting 50% amber/chocolate or lynx/lilac depending on what the doe carries but I would not use him on black self since telling apart chestnut (black agouti) and chocolate chestnut can be very tricky. If you feel up to the challenge then go for it.

I'll definitely be breeding the lilac daughter back to the black father. I'll also be test breeding the black son I kept back to the blue tort mother next week. I have a chestnut doe, and at least a couple of black does that may be carriers also. I thought the lynx might be faster for finding them than breeding back to the sire. That should produce 50%, right?

(Boy, did I read dood's post too fast! Missed the part about 1/2s, and then didn't catch that the black should NOT be used.) Think I will test with just the elops, and keep the lynx as a back up for a while. Will have to let the flops go to make space...

I can't help you at all with the genetics part of it, but I will be at the Anderson Missouri show this weekend if you felt the need to sell that lilac doe.... or any others. PM or email me :D
