I have a few questions. The first one is how old do you have to be to start showing rabbits? I have a niece that loves rabbits and might want to get her instead in showing them. The second question is can you show mix breed rabbits?

Thanks for reading...

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I think you can never be too young, LOL. I have a friend who has a six-year-old who is just starting to show rabbits, and she's getting really good at posing them and everything. :)

I don't know about mixes. I don't think you can in an ARBA show. Someone correct me if I am wrong, as always!!! Though getting a purebred isn't too hard unless it is a rare or unpopular breed. It took me a long time to get my Champagnes. Maybe have her choose a breed she really likes and find a member of that breed?

Hope that helps! :)

The youngest exhibitor at the show this weekend about six, he did very well working with his rabbits.
He wasn't tall enough to see into the coops and hear the judge so he brought over the jerrycan his grandma had for water and stood on that so he could keep up. It gave him the 6" he needed :D

That is seriously adorable. :)

I'm going to probably get my little (8 years old) brother into showing, has to be 9 at the fair
the fair we go to does accept mixes, meat or pet.

If a rabbit looks enough like the breed you are showing it in, then you can show it, no matter what the parentage.

For a ARBA show they have to be 5-18 to show in youth. I guess the thinking is under 5 they will probably have to have adult assistance. Our 6 yo Grandson likes to help but he's not quite ready to show. He still likes to play with the buns too much instead of putting them on the table and paying attention.

In out county show we let kids show at 5. We also have a "pet" category along with meat and fur for any cross rabbits. You have to declare how you'll show them when you enter. We do give ribbons for each of these groups but then only the recognized breeds compete for BIS and RIS since there is really no way to judge the others against a standard.

No, you can't show "mixed breeds" at an ARBA show. The rabbits don't have to be pedigreed, but if they are a mixed breed, there's nothing to show them in. There are plenty of breeders around of any breed you want. Also, it would probably be a good idea to at least get a decent specimen of the breed to start off with or else the kid might get disappointed when they lose constantly to better animals.

You can use mixed breeds as showmanship rabbits in 4-H but that's a different story.

My youngest is 5 and she shows Mini-Rex. We specifically got that breed for her because it's just her size. She's been to 6 shows now and she's gotten pretty proficient about being able to get her buns on the table as long as she has her step stool to get her up there. She doesn't really care that she never wins she just likes being able to go to shows, play with other girls her age put the bunnies on the table. She's too young to be trusted with the chores, but she handles her lynx and lilac's every day so she definitely earns her right to show them by keeping them well groomed and tamed.
