I have some really pretty kits that are about 5 weeks old. I have noticed two have started shaking their heads and one ear is hanging down on each of them.

So, I thought I would treat them for ear mites. I have some 1% Ivermectin and was going to just put a couple drops on their neck.

Then I remembered the discussion of ivermectin and the vienna gene - ?

So, one of the kits in the litter looks like this:

(isn't he adorable??)

So, the blue eyes, does that mean they have the Vienna gene? ... and I can't use ivermectin on any of them?

Thanks for any help and clarity you can give me!!

Liz

I dont think the coloring genes matter when treating them for ear infections

Does the kit have black on its nose? If its all white its a BEW, meaning definitely carrying the Vianne gene

No Vienna, that color is 'ermine' which doesn't require the Vienna gene. A BEW is a Blue Eyed White, nothing other than white. The 'ermine' is from the light or dark Himilayan gene mixed with fawn. The color code is: A_ __ cchd or cchl __ ee

That is really interesting! So blue eyes don't automatically mean they have the Vienna Gene? I had never heard of blue-eyed rabbits before I joined this group.
