always go with your gut...
have a doe with her due date as feb 1... just went out to check her and sure enough there was a baby on the ground under her cage. thank heavens its not the terrible freezing temps we were having. got him tucked in my shirt and he is wigglin up a storm.
i felt other babies in her belly for sure and she has had litters of 5 and 8 before. i put her nest in this morning and she hasnt touched it. my only other bred doe isnt even near her and not even half through her pregnancy if she took. so the baby has to be hers.
looks like i will be checkin on her in a bit...

__________ Wed Jan 30, 2013 9:21 pm __________

just found another baby. also on the ground.... GRRR!
i put a second nest in with plenty of hay. put saved hair in one nest with the 2 babies so far. she still has room on the cage floor though so i will just be checking on her every lil while i suppose.

well at least it is 54*F here now instead of the 2*F that is has been for a while.

I understand. Today was 34F and we were stripping off layers b/c it was too hot. Funny how you adjust.

watch put-- this section of Ohio is supposed to get to the lower 20s tonight--My home is already being pelted with the freezing rain that is causing the temps to drop---and yeah, it did get REAL close to 60 today-- even had my front door open for a few hours, airing out the house...

its raining here. just started at about 11PM and its windy.

midnight here and still no babies other then these 2. mom was acting like they werent even there so i brought em in cause they were getting cold and still.

When you say "on the ground" do you mean the floor or outside the cage? Does the cage not have babysaver wire?

the cage doesnt have babywire... the babies were on the ground under the cage.

i wasnt that worried about it before because they always had the babies in the nest or in a nice nest made on the wire and the babies wouldnt wiggle out of it.
doesnt seem to matter to this doe anymore i guess. she had 10 total. all dead  she is gettin sold or to the snake guy if he wants her. last time she had dumped the nest over of couple day old babies. this time she just had them all over the wire and its 25*F so they were all like frozen raisins.

Doe cages ALWAYS need babysaver, because even if they are born in the nest, they can "catch a ride" out of the box on the doe's teat and then end up falling out of the cage. It sounds like she has not been such a good mom...was this her second litter or has she had more?

Oh, I'm so sorry about the babies! :( Did the ones you put in the nest box earlier survive?

no. i had put them out in the nest (with lots of saved hair from previous nests) as i had a doctors appointment and wouldnt be back. i figured she would feed them or finish havin the babies and feed them all....

__________ Thu Jan 31, 2013 10:12 pm __________

this is her third litter.
her last litter (second one, litter of 8) was the one she tipped the nest over several times and i brought them in and just brought the nest out for feeding until their eyes opened and they could huddle together without mom just scrambling them all over.
her first litter (litter of 6) she did great. no problems at all and only one died but i had figured that because her mom always had litters of 8 and only 5 living through weaning.
