I've only seen 2 orange netherland dwarfs where I live- New Zealand. So, I think they are fairly rare here. So I was reading a forum on genetics and within the forum someone posted that you get Orange from breeding Tort to Chestnut. Does that sound correct?

I believe that orange is also called red in some breeds
the genetics would be
A_ B_ C_ D_ ee -agouti, black, full color, dense, non extension

tort is

aa B_ C_ D_ ee -self, black, full color, dense, non extension

chestnut is

A_ B_ C_ D_ E_ agouti, black, full color, dense, extension

The _ in each notation is "unknown" so if the chestnut carries the recessive "e" gene with its "E" gene then half the kits would be orange. If not, then the kits would all be chestnut [if all the other genes are dominant. If not, there are other possibilities.]

Hope that helps answer your question,

So if you wanted to breed oranges (without using an actual orange) you would have to breed a Chestnut to a Tort- and take the chestnut (ee carriers) and breed them to a tort? Then you would get oranges?
