This litter has had some dirty bottom trouble. I think it might be because I lost track of time and the doe, being an overzealous mom, nursed the litter and her new litter. I'm guessing the milk got too rich. The others are a lot better but I have one that I think is a doe who got an infection. I put her in a bucket of warm water and plain dawn soap until everything soaked off her fur. She was rather panicky when I got her from the cage but after sitting in the water for a second she just stopped and has been a limp rag through the washing and drying. I think she decided it actually felt better and now she's just sitting there in a piece of flannel. I thought some white came out of the vent but it might have just been fur and I found no discharge after cleaning and pressing on things. I managed to find the slit and guess it's a doe but she's so swollen the opening is pushed down against skin and above it is a bad red/purple. Being a doe I worry infection might have gone deeper. I tried to get pics but my camera hates white. I will have to take them when there is daylight to use.

I have a couple debates of what to try. Should I put her back with her siblings in the cage I just cleaned and put down a layer of pine pellets or her own cage or a different bedding? At 4 weeks old with potential digestive upset should I try antibiotics or just keep rinsing her with plain soap?

I think I would keep her in a wire cage (so no bedding gets stuck to her "parts"), and preferably keep her with her siblings.

I think I would avoid the antibiotics for now, and just keep her clean.

I have nothing to add regarding the infection, but just wanted to say that when I had to wash my kits' bottoms, every last one of them seemed to really enjoy the warm butt bath. I think it does feel good to them, I hope you caught things in time, poor little girl. :(

Well she ended up in a small cage in the heated hedgehog room because she was shivering and is a little thinner than the others. Not that much but netherlands barely have flesh as it is so I didn't want to put her back in the 60F basement. I can't put the entire litter in that cage but I might pick her out a friend and they can have the chinchillas' very pricy bluegrass hay since 2 baby netherlands won't eat much.

Maybe you can give her some feedings from mom if mom will cooperate? Sounds like she still young enough to be nursing some.

No more poopy butts since I weaned them and put them on hay only. Doe looks less irritated and my husband can confirm she can pee. He's trying to get his pants dry before bed.

Glad to hear they are doing better :)
