Does anyoe here use anything to prevent bacteria, virus and bugs from feasting in the colonies bedding?

From today I'll be using Stalosan. It's a fosfate and mineral mix. Non-toxic and effective to prevent coccoidia among other things, as well as reduce smell and ammoniak building up. 8kg cost about 20usd and should last a little more than a year for my colony and the two grow-out pens. (I'm only using it in the potty corner, but I think I'll mix some in the sand as well).

Do you have the same on your side of the pond? :) Or something similiar?
I've used Stalosan for horses in vatrious stables before but a member on another (swedish) rabbit forum brought it to mind when she said she used it. I figured it would be a good idea, getting conageous disease is the number one fear in my book! This low cost to prevent it fairly effectively - yes please!

I have never heard of them? :)

I tried to google but it won't say exactly what it is. What's the ingredients?
Is it chemicals? Is it toxic?

It's used in the colony while the rabbits are there to keep parasites and bacteria from multiplying. Not everyone uses it and it may not at all be necessary, it's up to you :)

I use it in the pottycorners.

I just realized that there is a Stalosan Save with -as far as I can see - the same active ingredients as the powder. It's used for healing cuts quicker.

My thought is that if there's a safe way to effectively keep disease risk at bay in a bedding where the rabbits will be in contact with their feces.. I rather prevent coccoidia than try to save the herd when I find spots on the liver. Of course, I might be just as safe without it,.. but t's cheap and harmless (even increasing health) :)

I've used it in horse stalls before, but never thought of it for the rabbits.

I found a page in english with Stalosan:

We used to use it (Stalosan)in the pig barn, never thought of using it for the rabbits.

https://bunnyrabbit.com/info/vanodine.htm Vanodine is Iodine based.

Odorban http://www.odoban.com/products/odobanr- ... -scent.php It's relatively safe, but not as safe as Vanodine.<br /><br />__________ Wed May 29, 2013 12:10 pm __________<br /><br />

Nope, not if you don't need to. Generally I just use white vinegar.

Ivory: Ok :)

Skysthelimit: But you're talking about desinfecting the cages while they're empty? Not something used in bedding (in a solid bottomed cage or colony) to prevent coccoidia, worms or other nastiness, while the rabbit is still there? Effective between cleanings as well?

Thanks for clarifying the content :)

The Odorban yes, but the Vanodine you can actually use on the rabbit, the poop boards and floors. It's supposedly gentle enough to spray on the rabbit for infections.

Vanodine is an iodine based disinfectant.

Stalosan is a (powdered) metal salt disinfectant that it is applied with a duster. It is available in the US but only from a few places.

Probably. Not because it is toxic, but you need to rinse it off or the acid will destroy the galvanization.

I use vinegar on my cages also, as well as Betadine Surgical scrub, and alcohol. I'm probably a bit more thorough than necessary, but better safe than sorry! :p

Bleach can also be used, but once again, must be rinsed. It dries to a salt and will corrode the wire.

I don't generally spray it on cages, but on surfaces, feeders and crocks.
