Every gene sequence I see for magpie shows agouti, but then what are they without it? If they are ata or aa?

I have a tri doe that is supposed to be ata I bred her to her son who is a black magpie. His sire is listed as A_B_cchd_D_ej_

I have the doe as ataB_C_Ddeje
She's produced tans and selfs (some dilute) with a chocolate buck, and black magpie, broken sable magpie, and ermine with a black magpie buck. This is all what I was told from her previous owners. I'm still waiting on my first litter from her.

Im dealing with pure Rex, but examples from other breeds are more than welcome.

There has been quite a debate over the best genetics for harlequin (magpie, brindle) e(j). Some prefer agouti, so you don't get the torted aa self smut on the face patterning. Others prefer aa so you get better banding on the belly and no light sections on the flanks. So yes, you can get magpie on agouti, tan, or self non-agouti. To see how the various combinations of A agouti and E extension interact, see https://www.gbfarm.org/rabbit/steel-phenotype-chart.shtml

Thank you! I'll try to get that page up on my computer. I can't read it on my phone.

I'm trying to figure out the difference in phenotype between them still (if there is one since being magpie the yellow pigment is gone). I guess I'll breed my magpie buck to my chocolate (self) doe and see what I get. Hopefully that will tell me if he has Agouti, tan, and/or self.
