So, less than 48 hours into owning rabbits I have 2 live popples but lost 6. I went out this morning to find babies on the wire. Some were chewed on, some were just cold so I tried warming them with a warm wet towel to no avail. Two were moving well so they stayed the day inside where it was warm. I tried putting a new nest box with her existing nest in the cage with the babies and she hopped in and sniffed around so I left her alone for a bit, but when I went back they still hadn't been fed. I brought them back in to stay warm because her nest isn't very furry and I'll take them back out in the morning. If she doesn't feed I will try flipping her, but since we don't know each other very well, not sure how that will work. I could have been so much better prepared if I had thought she was actually going to kindle. I really thought it was just stress from the wreck. I am going to have to watch my other 2 does very carefully. Think I should put some nest boxes in with them just in case, since obviously the date I was given was not exactly accurate???

BTW, will post some pics of the babies if they make it.

Aw. :( I'm sorry.

At least you have two live kits, and mama doe deserves a free pass- she probably isn't thinking straight yet after her ordeal with the car accident. ;)

Do watch the other does- make sure to give them plenty of hay so you can watch for the hay mustache! :p I would go ahead and give them nests. The worst that will happen is they will soil them, which is a lot better alternative to having a bunch of kits born on the wire.

I hope you and your husband are feeling okay and everything is getting straightened out with the insurance company.

Thank you! Yes, at least I have 2 babies...wow, that was quick. Talk about jumping in with both feet! The best laid schemes of mice and men, I guess, lol.

Yeah, that's a pretty fast dive into rabbits!

So sorry you lost some, but yes, I'd definitely give her a pass on this litter! Wouldn't include it as a "strike" if you have a 3-strike policy.

The kits will probably be fed tomorrow... as 3mina said, it can take a day or two for milk to come in. It's usually under 24 hours, but not always.

Poor girl... maybe a couple of raisins, then some parsley or BOSS... :)

The babies made it through the night...going to take them out and see if they get fed this morning. Hoping we won't have to do this the hard way.

__________ Wed Jan 30, 2013 7:52 am __________

YAY! They have full bellies!!! But the nest is still less than desirable and after 2 weeks of springlike weather in the 70s it's going to be cold today, so I think I'll bring the nest box back in for the day just to be safe!

Oh good! Glad she fed them :) With only 2 in the box, you might want to plan to keep them in the first week or so, taking them out only to nurse. :)

I had thought I would just bring them in at night and leave them in with mom during the day while it's warm...but my warm weather went away, so yeah, I guess I'll just take them out to her in the mornings and evenings and bring them back in until we get some warm weather back.
