So...how do you keep fresh foods, such as vegies and hay from simply falling thru the bottom of the cage when feeding this way. My rabbits loose most of what I put in with them...I primarily feed using pellets, but do give them the occasional treats when they are available in small amounts

If the pieces are small, I suppose they could fall through, but normally if they are just laid in lengthwise the rabbits should manage them fine with minimal loss through the wire. But if it is a problem, use a square of cardboard for a plate or give them a crock.

about every other day I break up one carrot and share it between the 3...I think they loose it thru the sides actually...on the doe cages I will be installing the baby guards, so that may help...the hay seems to get lost at a pretty good rate...very small amounts given on the odd carrot days...thanks for the suggestion

Feede you Hay in a Hay-rack, not tossed onto the cage floor.
They will pull the hay in as they are eating it
and the rest will remain in the rack.
You will always find a bit on the floor as rabbits are
not very neat nor cautious eaters.
I suppose they know that that flunky that feeds them will
surely come around and give the some more sometime soon!
Ottersatin. :eek:ldtimer:

I got some short sided cat crocks from the dollar store. I put the treats in these when I feed treats, and remove the crock as soon as they are finished eating the treats, so that the crock does not get soiled. Every rabbit that I give treats to has it's own dish. If you don't want to have that many crocks, then disinfecting and rincing and air drying them after each use is fine. This works for someone who doesn't have a lot of rabbits, like myself. My youngsters have a crock for rolled oats, but that gets removed too before they soil it (babies like to sit in it).

I do something similar to Jessykah's crocks. Michael (my SO) uses a LOT of those "nukable" meals...the 8oz Michelina or Budget Gormet things that you just pop in the Microwave for a couple of minutes. I save the containers..they're sturdy and either heavy plastic or a nice hefty paper. I use those as trays for treats.
