I was wondering how to start a line of broken new zealands. Do I have to start with NZs that already have a broken color? I'm new to this but I assume that its not as simple as breeding a red to a white. But that being said, broken color patterns came from somewhere... how far back up the chain of crossbreeding could I go to get that pattern? Or do you recommend buying stock that already have that color pattern? And if so does anyone know of anyone that has any for sale?

I would purchase at leasst one B/color preferably a Buck.
You have to have the gene to get broken.
By breeding a Broken to a solid color at least a percentage
of the offspring will carry the gene. A White/Albino rabbit
can hide the gene. It's like having a multi coloer couch with
a White sheet tossed over it, you can't see the color but it's there.
The important part is getting the broken gene fixed into the line.
Ottersatin. :eek:ldtimer:

Finding a broken that is as good as you can get is best, especially if you're wanting to show them sooner then later. If you try to breed it in, which is possible, it will take several generations and then even more to get back to 'good' new zealands most likely. Not saying couldn't get lucky and in 4 have a nice broken...but its unlikely. If you're wanting to work on a line like that though and have lots of meat kids for your own use or some thing like that, I don't see any problem it would be unreasonable to start from scratch though.

I suggest trying to find Broken New Zealands. I'm not one to completely discount crossbreeding, I think it can be useful if you have the experience in rabbits to pull it off and acheive your goals, but I don't cross over fur types. Instead of crossing to a Broken Satin or Broken Rex, just try to find a Broken NZ.

Ok you guys are like the rabbit hot-line. Do any of you guys know where I could track a Broken NZ? I live in Missouri if that makes a differance.

Here are some breeders that you might email and check with that I've found listed in a couple places for NZ, I don't know if they've got broken reds but they might be able to put you in touch with some one that has a broken. Even if you can get a broken black and breed it to a red doe then breed out the line it would be a better start. If you have FB, I might be able to add you to a couple groups that might be able to help get them your way from some where else as well if you can't find any others.

SMR,

MaggieJ has been cautioning against posting addresses/phone numbers because of all of the recent ARA activity. It might be wise to edit that info out of your post, and/or pm it to Man alive.

Yep I don't want to put anyones personal information at risk, but if you would like to get info concerning broken red/reds to me then send me a PM.

And thanks OneAcreFarm I did find a breeder of NZRs kinda sorta in my area. And a lady told me she had a NZR that had white on it but it was mostly red and that she didn't think that it qualified as a broken pattern. I'm thinking it will still get me going in the right direction though. But for the record... is there a certain percentage a broken color has to be to be considered actually broken?
Like 50/50
Red/White
White/Black?

Good deal. I hope that she will sell me her buck with a semi broken pattern, or at least stud him out.
