Continued Eye Trouble.......update and new info and pic!

I still have a buck with a weepy eye. One is ok, the other one is runny and buldgy. I have been reading about hay allergies, and will get the hay out of his cage today to see if that helps. My main treatment has been wiping it with a warm washcloth (which he hates), and some new stock around the edges to help with hair re growth and overall healing. I read something about flushing it with human eye drops, and am also wondering if anyone has ever used Pen G for an eye infection and had any luck?

Had him for over a month and no snuffels, and so far all the other buns are exhibiting no signs of any kind.

He's still quarantined, and we are careful to wash good and feed him last when working with them.

It is possible the kids have not been as careful, so I have been watching everyone close but so far it doesn't seem to be catching, but does seem to be getting worse.......

Human grade eyedrops would be fine just make sure they are non-steroidal since steroids inhibit healing, so if the problem is a scratch to the cornea they would be counter-productive.

I (and our member Caroline!) attended a seminar a couple of years ago by one of the well known west coast judges and longtime breeders on health care for rabbits, and she uses Pen-G in the eyes with great success.

Great news! At least it feels good to keep being proactive. I have never used pen G at all before, but see it coming up on here quite often and made sure to locate it at my tractor supply store in case I ever needed to. It's not like an injection in the eye is it?

Just put a drop in the eye. I can't remember how many days she treated for... but according to the bottle:

Continue treatment until recovery is apparent and for at least one day after symptoms disappear, usually within 2-3 days. Treatment should not exceed 4 days.

On a side note, Pen-G needs to be refrigerated, and the components separate. You need to allow it to come to room temperature and shake vigorously to mix it thoroughly. For that reason, I would keep a cc or two in your treatment syringe since it will warm up faster that way. Just pull some air into the syringe and shake it prior to use.

Just put a drop of the 100 ml in the infected eye? This bottle only has directions for injections of much larger animals....just checking

I read on some other threads and I did find the answer to the above question, and I put a couple of drops in each eye. I also noticed thinning hair around his nose and a small bump, which I believe could be the start of an abscess there. Is this common and in your experience what does it mean? I assume infection, but is it pretty far gone or should I start with injections? I am not 100% sure but it did seem like a small knot/bump that made his nose protrude a bit, and was a little more noticeable when he was on my lap and I was looking down at him. Compared it to my other buns and it seems off. Also seems to have dandruff type flakes on skin.....still no sneezing or snot yet. Also-took out all the hay for now. He's eating and drinking well from what I can tell

Not common, and don't know for sure. Could be an infected tooth- the lacrimal galnds (tear ducts) drain through the sinuses- so if he has a bad tooth on that side it may have caused a pocket of infection in the sinus cavity which is causing the infection to back up and drain from the eye. Pictures would be most helpful.

Also seems to have dandruff type flakes on skin.

If the dandruff is most noticeable on his neck and ear area, it is likely fur mites. Treat by rubbing some food grade diatomaceous earth into his fur.

Dandruff is most noticeable around his eyes and nose area. I'll see about getting some pics. How do I check the tooth? I should be able to see it just by opening his mouth? Working on pics although it's hard to see because he still has a lot of hair....I tried opening his mouth and he wasn't having it I think he's in pain....

Kind of hard to tell on the nose, and this one was uploaded last week but I see it a little now that I noticed it on him......he doesn't look healthy

It is slightly more swollen on his right side, and the worst eye is his left, but his is having some issues in both eyes.

I am having probably the same problem with my mini rex buck. Weepy eye, dandruffy flakes where the moisture dries, hair loss around the eye, and no snuffles symptoms. Taking away the hay didn't help, and switching Trooper back to his old feed hasn't either. His teeth look okay. I would put neosporin on his eyes to keep the mousure off the bare skin around the eyes. No other rabbit is being affected in the rabbitry.

Perhaps it's a weather thing? I don't know so I am following all the recent eye problem threads (there's been a handful that appeared about the same time as Trooper's) and I wonder what we all have in common.
