My latest litter of Rex bunnies. I need help determining what color the brown ones are.

Parents are both Opal
Dam's parents were both Lynx
Sire's parents were Black and Broken Opal

I would guess Lynx - but I don't want to guess. In my mind, Lynx would be more red and these are more beige or brown.

Thanks in advance for your help!

What color is the sire and the dam's pedigree is wrong. Lynx is the chocolate of opal. You cannot get a black based opal from 2 chocolate based lynx.

Very right.

Good lynx color http://mysite.verizon.net/res14yqyl/id11.html

Just because they are light now, does not mean they aren't washed out lynx. Agoutis are not the easiest to get good color, and they change alot and lynx is a notoriously misidentified and hard to breed for color.

I don't even try to ID Rex colours anymore.

Apparently even the judges cannot tell them apart.

Just the lynx. It's not a variety that is seen very often. That's why I recommend to stick with the color crossing rules. With the exception of watching my new litter of Cals, and watching the Sables change, everything else is pretty clear when corresponding colors are matched.

Both the dam and the sire of these kits are Opal.

The Dam's pedigree says that her Sire was Lynx and her Dam was Lynx.
The Sire's pedigree says that his Sire was Black and his Dam was Broken Opal.

I guess if the pedigrees are incorrect, then so be it. Bummer. I figure the grey kits are also Opal but what about the brown ones?

Look like fawns but I've never seen a lynx.

I have, and these guys don't really look lynx. They do look fawn, which is a wideband. In order to get Opal, that means the Lynx was not a lynx. http://www.amysrabbitranch.com/Color&Ge ... xCream.pdf

Amber in Rex is much darker, looks like a castor with no black surface banding.

If the browns were not Rex I would say they are torts.

They dont seem to have the lighter trim seen in agouti but a darker trim seen in tortoiseshells.

Could they be very light castors or fawns (=non-extendion agouti without the wideband)

Even in Rex, the tort would have dark ears, and dark sides from birth. This color is still too light for a tort Mini Rex.

They have that grey ticked coat that identifies them as agoutis of some sort. It's only the lack of deep rufus color that makes them difficult to identify. Their color is too light to easily fall under the category of any of the acceptable Rex colors.

Y'all have to know I'm just sitting here laughing! Why oh why can't I have normal critters!?! If you guys are stumped, I don't know what to say. I just know that after looking at all the pictures I could find and looking at genetic color charts, I still had no real idea what color they are.

You think anyone would mind if I put down the color on their pedigree sheets as "Beats Me"? ;-)

Seriously, thank you for all your help. I'll let them grow and see if they end up looking more like a fawn color.

they look like the ambers I've gotten for the age that they are.

Ambers can be lighter or darker in colour and often change as they mature.

Whatever they are....they will make good pets or good food. :) I personally wouldn't sell them as breeders except perhaps to a breeder for pets UNLESS they have exceptional type.

I agree. Unless the get much darker they won't be a good Rex color.

Amber is a chocolate agouti. A castor with two chocolate genes. A_bbC_D_E_. Amber was created as a variety, only because it is the intermediate step between agouti and lynx. http://www.nationalrexrc.org/Amber.htm Lynx is a dilute of Amber. A_bbC_ddE_

It would be easier if colors were referred to by scientific names, since they don't translate well across breeds.

ok, I was going to suggest chocolate agouti. Especially now since the mom was one. Perhaps the rufus factors are lacking so it doesnt have the orange needed.
