Going through the kits this morning and noticed that one has some poop kinda stuck to his butt. I'm used to cleaning pasty butt chicks so I don't have a problem cleaning the kit but I wanted to check and see if this is something the momma will do on her own or should I be proactive? My gut is telling me to take care of it but wanted to double check.

I would just go ahead a do it. I usually make sure I have a babywipe on hand when handling kits, that way I can clean up any urine spots, so I just use that for any dirty bums I might find.

I would clean it off, especially if it has hardened and is "crusty"... that would be hard for the doe to get off, and if it keeps accumulating it could block the kit from urinating or defecating properly.

Incidentally, after many years of cleaning chick butts with warm water to soften the poop, I found out that if you use hydrogen peroxide, it loosens right up and comes off easily with no risk of tearing their delicate skin. I have heard of people accidentally "gutting" chicks when cleaning the vent area, so it always took me forever cleaning with the warm water because I was so cautious. I haven't tried it on bunny poo yet, but it might help!

The peroxide is a great idea! This last batch of chicks had a real problem with pasty butts. We spent hours cleaning butts and definitely ended up pulling some feathers. :(<br /><br />__________ Tue Mar 20, 2012 4:58 pm __________<br /><br />I found a second kit with poop stuck to him. The poop fell off pretty easily but was accompanied by some big globs of puss. I doctored him, then used the peroxide on the original kit and that poop fell off within a minute or so!

Both kits peed within less than a minute of me removing the poop so I have a feeling they were blocked up.

Should their pee be almost neon yellow? It's very, very yellow.

I'm glad the peroxide helped!

The kits may have urinated just because you were cleaning them- I get peed on a lot just when sexing kits. Their urine varies in color, just as with adults. I've had all shades of yellow, and on to almost orange... and it can be very stinky.

My 12 year old daughter was less than impressed that I got peed on. LOL But I'm glad that she stuck around to learn how to take care of the kits. We're working on making her more and more responsible for duties on the farm.
