I'm feeling confused as I thought I had read that Harlequins (Japanese & Magpies) cannot be shown/are not a recognized color. But in breeding Harlequin Mini Lops that result in Tri Color - the Tri's can be shown. Yet, I'm also coming across people referencing showing Japanese Harlequin Lops. When can they be shown, when can't they? Do the rules for accepted colors for 4-H vary from state to state or is it the same across the board?

I'm simply wanting to know for people that are interested in purchasing rabbits from me that are starting in 4-H. I don't want to be telling them they are not a showable color if in some shows they are.

Thanks for any feedback/clarification.

I haven't shown ML in a few years now, but straight harlequin was not a showable variety/non-recognized (unless something dramatic has changed while I've been away). Best of luck!

Unfortunaty only tri colours (broken harlequin) are showable in some of the breeds.

No breed accepts the harlequin or magpie colours except the Harlequin breed :(

It is pretty unfortunate and might change in the future for the Mini, French and English Lops as they accept a wide variety of colours but I doubt other breeds will allow them  If there is a COD for magpie then they can be shown but I haven't heard of a current one - I'll do some checking :)

ps IMHO a well marked broken magpie is a STUNNING animal and its a shame they cannot be shown.

__________ Sun Dec 07, 2014 10:08 am __________

I cannot find any breed that has magpie in a COD process so it is not showable.

Thanks much Dood for answering my question and checking into it for me. I greatly appreciate it! Broken Magpie was another thing I'd wondered about (as I thought that would look neat) so you answered that for me too.
Wish they could be shown but glad to at least know I've been indicated to people the correct answer on it.

The only American Rabbit Breeder Association color that is harlequin in nature that can be shown is the breed Harlequin. There is no other. Tri color can be shown, but that's in the broken group.

There are however some 4H and FFA shows that do not care. Most have adapted the SOP from the ARBA and their guidelines though, so the person buying needs to know what they need to get. I would be *very* careful, its been a growing trend here recently to buy brood or colors that I've blantly said are not showable or rabbits in general that are *just* showable for good show quality....then they get upset when they get dq'd or told that the rabbit while not having any dq's is not competitive. Make sure they understand! I've started requiring a signature on my sales to verify that and that they've looked over the rabbit and are satisfied with its health/looks. I'm not so worried about selling any thing any more, so if I never sell another rabbit to some one I don't know because of requiring sign to buy it doesn't matter to me.

I merged the posts for you, so now there is only one. :)

Harlequins are usually only used as breeding stock to be bred to tris so you don't get a bunch of Charlies in your tri litters.

A lot of 4-H showing is "Showmanship" and they accept rabbits with DQ's because they are judging the child's abilities, not the quality of the rabbit. You will need to find out the requirements in your area.

awww, I see so maybe that is what I was coming across... people who were showing for showmanship. Thanks for the reply and for merging the posts!
