I went out to tend the buns this morning and saw a 3-week old Silverfox kit at the top of the 18" tall wire cage. That's like 3 body lengths up! It was in the corner and it looked like he/she was inspecting the bolt that the cage is hung from. It climbed down before I could get my phone out for a picture.
Is this normal? :-o
Both parents are SFs. No monkeys involved.

Years ago I bought a mini rex doe for my kids for Easter, and we kept her in a 7' tall aviary so the kids could go into the cage with her. She would sometimes climb the wire to a height of about 5'!

I've caught my kits doing that several times. When I raised a litter inside last year, I'd even caught one hanging upside down from the cage ceiling!

I had some netherland dwarf kits fairly new out of the nest climb 2' up to fall out of an open topped cage into the colony. I didn't think there was any chance they could get up there so I didn't finish the top but every last one escaped in less than 24hrs.

Oh yes, kits can climb. In my first year with rabbits I built a hutch with 0.5m high doors, wich had a 2" slot on top for ventilation, since I was away for 2 weeks my poor neighbour had a hard time figuring out where they got out again and again and catching them, until she actually saw them climb the wire...

My first buck was a climber. He weighted a little under 7lbs. He was in a large above ground cage that had originally been a dog kennel. It has 1x2 wire on the sides but for the ceiling it was hog panel and had 4x4 holes in it. He had been in that cage for quite a while when one day I go outside and he's hopping around the yard. I go out and check all the cage doors and they are all locked. I finally decided one of the boys had let him out and shut the door back. I put him back and the next day he's out again. I finally figured out he was climbing out the top of the cage. I had to move him to another cage.

Some of his kits and grandkits are climbers as well. It's pretty funny to watch.

Yeah I threw some metal panels over my first cages only to find a younger mini rex male sitting in the cage with his adult male neighbor. Luckily Mocha was a very laid back rabbit and was only annoyed a male had dropped in his cage.

Blaze was one of our very first litterbuns. She had a knack for trouble  ! She would climb the walls all the time as if she were practicing for American Ninja Warrior  ! Once, and we still don't know how, the door of the hutch was opened and she was the only one to leave. My uncle found her that morning just exploring the back porch. He got Mom, and she caught Blaze!
