Is it possible to build a rabbit carrier? Of course it's just like a cage, and I've built all of my cages, but i am wondering what I would do for the bottom pan. Has anyone tried this? If I can't figure out the bottom pan, I will just order on from Bass.

I would check on the size trays you can purchase,
and build your carriers accordingly. You can build
a four hole carrier, a two hole or a three hole.
go with the size that will serve you best.
You probably want about 8" X 9 or 10" X 8" high for each hole.
I hope this helps.
Ottersatin. :eek:ldtimer:

I checked KLUBERTANZ, the price of the tray plus shipping is more than getting the whole carrier from Bass. It's starting to look like it just might be better to buy it.

Why not use one of those black mixing tubs (commonly used for cement), and build a carrier to fit in that? They are very sturdy, and 4"-5" deep, so no worries about spilled bedding. Attach the floor wire 2" up on the sides so you have a raised floor.

I do believe I will do the same myself for the upcoming show on the 28th! I only have 2 2-hole carriers, so need some myself. I can feel a pictorial post coming on... when I build mine, I will take photos! :p

Bass sells the spring locks, and I need to make an order with them anyway..

I will make a trip to home depot as soon as it reaches above 30 degrees here.

 Buy a couple for me while you're there please. I'll need some cage wire as well.

:)

My Homedepot does not sell cage wire. For that I have to go to Lowes. They actually beat TSC's wire prices. I build two cages for the price of the one I bought from Bass a few years back. I hope I don't look unprofessional with a homemade carrier at shows, but i do love to make my own stuff as much as possible.

Lowe's has mixing tubs- one stop shopping! I have a feeling my dog crate cart is about to have a job again!

When you bend the wire it will look more professional if you use a board when you do so. If you have a wide one it works best. Lay the board about 1/16"th behind the bend, and working from one end to the other, step on the board, bend over, and pull a short section toward yourself- step to the side, and repeat. Wear gloves or it will hurt- trust me, I know.

Have fun! Now I want to go to town. Almost.

IMHO, a person would regret buying the Chinese made junk at Lowe's or Tractor Supply. It's just not sturdy enough to buy and use for any extended period of time.

As far as the pans go, here's a thought. Look into getting a couple of small duratrays and build your carriers accordingly. Depending upon the size, they're normally available for somewhere between $12 and $20.

Also, what part of the Midwest are you living in? The reason I ask is that there are usually some local suppliers who not only sell their own, but they'll also custom build them for you. One such outfit is Fry Cages in Emporia, KS. Another is Koenig Kountry Supplies in IL.

Here is my homemade one made from scrap. Great for taken to the auction...

Buying a Duratray is cost prohibitive. The size I would need is about $23 (I'd rather have one three hole than several smaller ones). By the time I buy one and ship it, I could just buy the carrier from Bass. A three section carrier from Bass with s&h is only $44. I've been told to get what I need at shows, but I need something to take the bunnies to the shows first:)

I am in Ohio, there's nothing useful here, I don't even know why they pretend it's a Midwest State. Shipping and handling is what kills most things. Shipping from places like KLUBERTANZ, Koenig and even Bass sometimes is the shipping cost more than the product.

I made a bunch of carriers before we moved. I got a few 3-packs of cheap jelly-roll pans at Wal-Mart and used those for the poo pans, sizing the cages to the pans (different sizes for different breeds). I made the carriers with the same wire I use for regular cages, including floor wire, but I put the opening at the top. (Maybe all carriers are like that--I don't know.) Then I used wire springs (with hooks) to attach the carriers to the pans (after filling the pans with peat moss). Worked a treat!

Do you have any picts? I was looking for a pan long and heavy enough to use as one continuous base to set the wire cage on top. Are jelly roll pans foil or metal? I don't cook much.

To anyone who has used the wire from the supply stores, how long would you say it lasts? I've used it for all of my cages, but it hasn't been quite a year yet. I don't need these cages to last past 3-5 years, they are pretty much starters, until I can afford to buy the set up I want, whatever that is. I've been looking at a lot of breeders websites for barn ideas. I had Bass cages when I had pet bunnies, my Dad scrapped them when I moved out, but I still have one tray, and it's seriously rusty, it was used maybe three years and stored the other years. It's a 24 x 36, if it was in better condition I would use it. Those cages didn't seem to be of any better quality than the wire I have now.

__________ Mon Jan 16, 2012 9:30 am __________

That looks great. But if they are all day at a show, where does the pee and poo go?

This is only used for taking rabbits out of the cage at the action barn and out to my truck, where I have a larger yellow plastic carrier.

It takes the place of the cardboard box I used to use. If I planned to use it all day, I might cut a cardboard box to fit the bottom with 1" sides.

I don't do shows.

What about making it with a false bottom that is high enough to slide in one of those aluminum roasting pans? Those are really cheap and you can just throw it away when it gets too messed up...just a thought...

I'm traveling 6 hrs for a show so they've got to stay clean (the rabbits). I will measure some of those pans, and see how many compartments I can divide it into.
