Buck who is frequently excited

Hey folks. I have a 7.5 year old mini rex (see avatar) who lives loose in the house like our dog. We've had him since he was a baby. He is unaltered.

I have never bred rabbits, nor do I know what it's like to have a sexually active buck.

He has just recently developed a constant urge to mate. He frequently rubs himself against the floor and flicks his tail up and down quickly. He must be ejaculating occasionally because my rug is wet. He makes a grunting noise.

This began about 6 months ago. It was my fault. I am a fiber spinner and had some angora wool shipped to me. It was off of adult breeding does. As soon as he smelled it, he went absolutely insane and scaled our book shelf to get himself into the box of fiber. I didn't think of it when I had the fiber in the house, but it makes sense that it would have an effect on him!

I've given him a stuffed animal, as well as a rolled up tube towel, but he is not interested in mounting those. He has been chasing his tail as well as seeming to be uncomfortable, and I think it's because of the erection. Lately, he has been making noises and circles our schnazuer.

How can I help him be more comfortable? I'd be happy to get him a female rabbit if that will fix his issues. Is this a little late in age to be getting so excited?

Well, this is a new one to me! :lol:

I wouldn't bother getting him a lady friend. He wont be able to breed her often enough to solve the problem.

Maybe you could knit some of the wool into a little band and put it on a stuffed animal for him? I'm sure your dog would thank you.

Before we moved, I let one of the stuffed animals get "seasoned" by leaving it overnight in the box of angora wool. He DID go crazy, but did not use the stuffed animal. I have since thrown the stuffed animal away as well as move to a new house.

I feel bad for him.

That's an even better idea than sacrificing some of the spun wool! Maybe he'll "use it" this time.

We're you considering a spayed female? It might work if she really enjoys mating behavior...or she might get annoyed one day and castrate your buck.

The chasing his tail and circling is normal mating behaviour and not "uncomfortable" for him and since he continues to perform the behaviours it is probably pleasurable as he has finally discover sex after 7 years.

After 6 months i would has thought the scent of the angora would have disipated and this behaviour ended but some males just have a stronger sex drive and I would not get a female for him as he is likely to torment her to the point of violence.

You mention noticing an erection which is not normally noticeable in rabbits and it is possible he has debris in his sheath or even a hair wrapped around his penis that he may need assistance with, please make sure this is not the problem.

Dood, thanks so much. It's not like a permanent erection, but those are great tips. We've only seen it when he's in the height of his excited movements/dances or rubbing against the carpet.... then he'll stand up and look down at it, which is generally when we see it. It does go away. I was quite confused when I first saw it, but then said DUH!!!

We'll give a better look the next time we notice it. When it first happened and I saw it, I took a photo of it for future reference as I didn't know if it were a problem at the time. Then I felt silly.

My favorite rabbit (not for this reason) is a Holland Lop called Mr Loveable. He is very easily excited. When you reach in his cage he will try to circle around your hand. If allowed he will mount your hand and grab onto your arm. You could literally lift him out of the cage like that. He quite enjoys stuffed animals also. I have lifted him off items before when he was mounting them and his erection was quite obvious.
