We have a black mini rex. If we bred it to a white, torty, or a broken coat mini rex.. Will the black dominate or will the offspring take different color?? We are trying ot decide what color female to get.
Thanks in advance!!!

Black x white = anything but most likely chestnut

Black x tort = mostly Black

Black x Broken = half will be broken and half will be solid, what is the other colour of the broken?

The more information about the colours of the rabbits parents and siblings the better we can guess what colour kits you'll get.

You need to better describe what you mean by 'colourful '

Here is a popular website that describes rabbit colour genetics - http://www.threelittleladiesrabbitry.com/colorgenes.php

If you want to get many different colours in your litters you need to have parents who are or who carry the recessive colours you desire.

You may get different colours since we don't know what the parents or siblings colours are. Chestnut is dominant, which means stronger, than most other colours and since your buck is black, he will likely have black kits.

In mini rex chestnut is called castor. What colors do you like? Maybe you could pick a color to work on. Black works with a lot of different colors.. how "colorful" the litters are would depend.

Also there's two different "whites," red eyed white and blue eyed white...just throwin' that out there. :) Other than super-basics, I know next to nothing about colors so don't mind me, lol.

Dood seems to have you pretty well covered as far as what to expect though. :)

Mini Rex colors shouldn't be messed with if you are breeding for show or ever will breed for show. Just some colors are not good to mix. On the show table there are quite a few points on oolor and messing them up genetically can harm the color. If you want litters with lots of color go to mini lops.

A REW is a colored rabbit in a white fur bag. Can be most anything under there. But, often it's more black at least in this part of the country. You could go to a broken otter and then you would at least get blacks, broken blacks, otters and broken otters.

Just want to add if your going to do anything with red, it's best to breed red to red, as often breeding red to other colors you get a "smutty" affect. Sometimes I'll add a red into my castor program, if my red has a lot of castors in the background to intensify the ring coloring.

I have bred a black to a red a couple times, and often for show wise I have found the castors that come from that breeding are a bit on the dark side, but have gotten a few nice ones.

I highly suggest this website if you want to play around with mini rex colors: http://mr-colors.tripod.com/

If you want to show it would be best to get another self color. Black, blue, chocolate, or lilac being the common ones. Breeding in agouti like red or nonextension like tort will just give you rabbits that can't be shown. Now if your not showing it really doesn't matter and you can play with colors all you like but your rabbits will either have to go for meat or pet market.
