My daughter is selling/ trading her buck for a unrelated buck. She has a blue tri and a orange/ black tri doe. so was wanting to get a buck that color would compliment them. We found a black buck but found out he has blue eyes. So will that be bad to mix into the tri color? She plans to show and breed her rabbits.

Yes, it is bad to mix vienna into a line unless you intend to breed for BEW. Also, vienna is bad to mix with broken, as it can be difficult to tell who's broken and who's broken vienna.

Do not breed to a blue eyed Vienna marked buck or you could get disqualifying white marks on your rabbits and can make broken rabbits look like false Charlie's which cannot be shown.

The colour buck you decide on depends on what colour she wants to show.

Tri colours should only be bred to other tri colours or reds or you will only get broken. If you don't mind getting soldid and broken chestnut and possibly solid and broken black or solid and broken opal then you can breed to pretty much any colour.

Ok thanks i will tell her to pass. Well i want her to improve the looks of her Holland lops. So ive been told to look at body first then color. So ive decide to look for a black, red, blue or rew buck with good lines and looks.

__________ Tue Oct 08, 2013 7:32 pm __________

There is a very nice black buck i would love to get her, His father has many show wins. He has like 1 but he has been used as a breeder more then anything.

this is very good advice, but you still want showable colours.

Genetically the tri-colours are broken chestnut and broken opal with a Japanese harlequin gene or two making them blue and black tri colours. I would stay away from red or REW and choose a typey black, blue or chestnut.

Tri colours can be difficult to identify, is there any way you could post some pictures?

Ive posed pics before but i dont mind posting pics again :)

Thanks for re-posting, i remember these girls :)

Very nice and definitely agouti based rather than self so my first choice would be a chestnut buck then a black or blue.

If you can, try and stay away from any self coloured bucks who had a tort or sable point parent or siblings as you may get Torted tri colours which are a neat colour but not showable.

Thank you :) I found out D&A Rabbitry is not to far from me and i found out there is a lady that may transport a bunny from her closer to me being we cant travel far right know. She has a harlie jr buck for sale but im not sure i like his head but he maybe going threw his ugly stage idk.
So question how do u know there agouti based and not self? And the genetic code thing how would i figure out what there's is? Its so confusing lol.
The blue tri doe Courtney sire is Blue and has a blue tri and blue parents. The dam is a Broken cream and goes back to blue tri and chestnut.
The orange/ black tri doe is full of Orange and orange black tri on both side.

I can tell as they have excellent ring colour which is from the agouti gene. I am 99% sure they are agouti. Self based tris and harli's tend to look 'smokey' like torts but not always :) I have a blue harli who is agouti based that has a tort/self look to him.

The blue tri doe Courtney sire is Blue and has a blue tri and blue parents. The dam is a Broken cream and goes back to blue tri and chestnut.
one of Courtenays parents must carry the harlequin gene so there was a mistake by the breeder somewhere. If the cream dam had a lot of white she may actually be a blue tri but difficult to see and sometimes rabbits are very minimally marked harli's with just the tiniest bit of brindling.

So if i stick with the other plan and keep the Opal buck who is Courtnay brother. So he has blue and tri in him and breed him to Montana the orange tri what will i get? Will that be a no no?

__________ Wed Oct 09, 2013 2:32 pm __________

Ill just start a new post and see what u all think LOL.
